I surprised it doesn’t require you to install an app, connect it to the internet, and subscribe to their air flow services.

Doesn’t look that way, although the thing does have an app, but it only has one physical button, so if you lose the remote, you either connect via an app (for a fan, really?) or you buy a replacement. Why not 2 buttons and a menu, since it has a screen, as a bare minimum?
