I believe “Legend of Dragoon” had a setup like this. I think it was a PS1 game with very SNES era jrpg conventions

We used to go to a store called Microplay that used to rent out games for consoles at an amazing price: $1/day on 30 day rental and to switch a game it only cost the tax that would have applied. I think we rented/finished 80% of the ps1 games they had in stock, usually games took about a week for each of us to finish, we def got a great value out of it
