  @burndown okay so I installed it using Heroic Games Launcher and used Proton-GE-latest as the proton version. No other tweaks necessary.

    Oh wow i hadnt heard of Heroic Games Launcher before this is amazing! If this allows Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition to work on mac os again that will be amazing
