Comment on Kumail Nanjiani Reveals He Went to Counseling Over ‘Eternals’ Bad Reviews: “I Do Have Trauma”

It’s a shame, what happened with that one. There was maybe some potential but something about it just didn’t click. Kumail was not the problem with that movie, neither were most of the actors. Maybe they shouldn’t have been told they were playing robots, some of them went too far. When I was watching it, I was like, why can’t this movie be about Kingo? He’s having so much more fun over there…
The story they were trying to tell was too big, with too many characters, and it never had a chance to take root. They got Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, and Ma Dong-seok basically sidelined all of them, shoe horned in Kit Harrington, and gave Brian Tyree Henry the most relatable character stuff but nowhere near the prominence he deserved.
Could have all been lost in the edit.
It really sucks that this was such a bad experience for Kumail, this is why veterans say never to read reviews. The press and the media is savage. Bad for your mental health, all that.

Yep. The movie needed to be twice as long for as many characters as it had. I kinda wished there was a 5 episode lead-in Disney Plus show with all the back stories, it would have helped.
Loved the artistic vision but most the actors did a good job, the weakest link was the writing.

I was just thinking it should have been a 9 or 10 ep series, and Marvel has such a poor track record with that, but honestly they pick the worst projects to turn into series. She-Hulk was rushed, padded, and edited badly, one character with one joke - but in Eternals here’s a chance to have a full 50 minute prestige episode about Kingo and his whole thing so we actually understand him and they’re like nah, a line of throwaway dialog is fine.
All they had to do was write five eps: Thena/Gilgamesh, Kingo, Phastos, Sersi/Ikaris, and maybe Sprite. One ep intro, a couple main story eps, and the two-part finale. No movie, just put that effort and financing into the proper format for this sprawling new universe.
