It would be great if this minimalist version almost without CSS always would be an option. Also, it would be cool if it was really easy to not only switch between provided themes, but also to add your own CSS code just as easily.
I was mostly thinking about a way to provide custom CSS in the settings, either copy/paste or upload a file. If those style rules was loaded at the end of the cascade, it would make it easy to "hack" together your own styling that would be persistent across browsers and devices, easy to share, and could be changed on the fly.
I would prefer not to use add-ons for styling. It is possible (quite easy in fact) to write custom CSS for a domain with Firefox. The problem is that these changes would be limited to that browser.
It is a great idea to make the UI as minimal (and functional) as possible, akin to HackerNews! Sane defaults and simple html structure lends itself well to (optional) personal customization. I know this has been a big thing for many subreddit's, where every sub can load their own css.

I'm aiming for the style to be akin to Hacker News, which is still fairly minimal. If enough comes up to make such a distinction meaningful, I would look into splitting them
As for custom themes, that seems like the responsibility of browser extensions. I've never seen a website offer that, but I guess it could be implemented

Would it be possible to add some optional, simple Bootstrap to it (or just allow the instance owner to easily configure the CSS)? In my experience, it makes my websites look much better with little effort. Also, I'm worried that this website's minimal theme would drive away some people who try it and dismiss it as unfinished (first impressions matter to people who don't care enough to look at the source code).
