Perplexity AI has presented a new proposal to TikTok’s parent company that would allow the U.S. government to own up to 50% of a new entity that merges Perplexity with TikTok’s U.S. business, according to a person familiar with the matter.
This is basically authoritarian takeover of the only for profit social media that was out of their direct control.
Pentagon defines current warfare into 5 zones, land, sea, air, space and cyberspace. The information war is massive and TikTok threatens message control. So obviously they will try to take it down or co-opt the algorithm. But the TikTok bill doesn’t end with TikTok. ANY website or media deemend a threat by the president can be forced to shut down. Including federated media like Lemmy. TikTok is the canary in the mine.
