Bit patterned media expected to arrive in the next decade.
I remember a decade ago my boss was ecstatic to see a petabyte that fit in a single rack at NAB, on spinning disks instead of tape no less. Crazy to think that in another decade a petabyte will fit in 3RU or maybe even smaller.

Conventional HDD are less expensive because they do not require lithography on the platters. But with this new technology that would change. So there wouldn’t be a price advantage, this is to say 100 terabytes would cost as much as if it was SSDs, i.m.o.
