No expectation of privacy in public I’m afraid :( not legally anyway.

Privacy, no, but many states have laws in place to prevent voyeurism - app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9A.44.115 for example.
Meta is already facing backlash for people using these things to harass workers and women, too.

That’s actually so good to hear, as a mom
AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Maybe not in the US, but that’s not true on the rest of the planet.

Fair enough I need to realize this place isn’t as American as Reddit.

Y’all know phones have cameras, right?
Drekaridill@lemmy.wtf 3 weeks ago
Are you implying that people shouldn’t be upset about the pervert glasses cameras because phones have cameras?
mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Calling them that because of the camera is undercut by everyone already carrying a camera, and routinely having them pointed toward you by holding the device.
The problem is the part where it uploads shit to corporate spy agencies, not the hardware being a tiny phone on your face. The hardware is not meaningfully different from the tiny phone… in your hand.

And cars have cameras and flock has cameras and ring has cameras and TVs and monitors and microphones everywhere. Its insane ppls are bitching so much about these glasses when they let Google home listen to everything inside their home. Almost like it’s being fueled by competitors, rather than actual ppl.
NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
I doubt it would be someone who also bought a pervert car and a pervert tv and a pervert doorbell and bugged their own home that would then bring up this problem with the pervert glasses.
What kind of competitor are you talking about?
Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 weeks ago
and flock has cameras
USA issue
and ring has cameras
Luckly i never saw one where i live but anyway, i remember that there was a huge backlash against them some time ago
TVs and monitors
What sort of TVs you buy?
insane ppls are bitching so much about these glasses when they let Google home listen to everything inside their home.
Jokes on you, i don’t have one and i removed Google Assistant from my devices lol, i also don’t see why it’s a problem to bitch about yet another camera around our streets
Are you a Meta employee or sum?

Why the fuck are these things legal??? How can one consent to a recording that is already taking place? I’m struggling to find a use case where glasses with cameras on them are useful.
Absolutely insane. These things should be banned. The temptation and ability for abuse far outweighs any benefit they may claim to provide.
minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Why is any of the surveillance that already exist everywhere around you, legal?
Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
That one’s easy: the State decides what’s legal, and the State likes spying on it’s people
sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
People are recording everything all the time with their phones anyway. That said, yeah, fuck these pervert glasses. I can see legit AR use cases like:
I’m sure there are more, but those are benevolent uses I can think of. As far as just walking around recording people, fuck that.

If you require LLM powered glasses to show you what to do next in a maintenance job you should not have a maintenance job. That’s what training and officially accredited qualifications are for.
This is without even going into the finer details of fault finding, diagnosis, risk assessment, personal safety (pervert glasses are not impact rated and pose a significant hazard in hazardous atmosphere environments, let alone the distraction of having a clanker chatting in your ear and flashing popups directly in your line of sight.)
If you want to know about the historical significance of an area while you are on holiday, then read about the area you are going to before you go, or buy a travel guide and support a historian or a writer that has spent their life researching the topic.
These glasses pose no purpose than harvesting data and recording people without their consent for the sake of the techbro panopticon.
