I love my steam deck. It’s underpowered for modern AAA games, even games a few years old make it sweaty. But dang it if it isn’t efficient, and inexpensive.
You can’t beat the performance in your backpack for $300.
People talk about the other handhelds, and granted I’ve not tried them. But while they may have fancier features and more performance, it’s not THAT much more performance, you’re still hampered. And to get that extra performance, you’re draining your battery. All for at least 2 to 3 times the price.
No shade on anyone who loves their alternate handhelds. But it’s just not worth it to me personally. I’ll stick with my steam deck until version 2, whenever it’s ready, no rush. Because I know it’ll have performance and efficiency. Until then, I’m quite pleased 🤷♂️

If you can’t find an original adapter, I can confirm this one works. Most of the other ones I had laying around wouldn’t work. I had to search for this one. It was only $15 when I got it in January 2025, not sure why it’s $25 now

That’s fair. The box that held all my wiiu stuff was mysteriously missing the pad charger. I think I used a dock before too? At any rate, I didn’t want another charger laying around. I’ve got four 6 foot USBC cables coming out of a pair of chargers under my couch that I use for everything. It only made sense to change it over 🤷♂️
So far it works great. Though I about to not using very often, I’ve got an actual steam deck, and recently got a better laptop, so I primarily use those 🤷♂️
If someone wants to buy it for whatever the going rate of an unmodded wiiu is, I’m game. My ADHD enjoyed the process of modding it, now is back in a box lol

Hey neat! I did the same thing a few months ago! Not sure how to link things on here.
Did you also swap the charger for USB C?
- Comment on GeForce Now finally gets a native app for the Steam Deck, solving what was our biggest complaint with the streaming service on Valve's plucky handheld 1 month ago:
Yeah that seems quite disingenuous for a device that literally popularized a whole new platform for PC gaming, and has spearheaded the efforts of Windows games on Linux, to the point of actually outperforming native installations of many games.
Bad journalism is bad.

Right?
I get it, more frames more better, and I agree.
But I don’t expect the steam deck to be a super performance machine. And personally, I am not that affected by 30fps. Below 30 it does start to bother me, and above 30 is significantly smoother.
I’m currently playing through HFW, and I can average about 40, it drops to 30 at times, and occasionally dips below, but by and large I’m very happy with it.
- Comment on Steam Deck gets a Battery Charge Limit control in the latest Beta 2 months ago:
IIRC it’s glued in, and there might be other barriers beyond that
- Comment on Steam Deck gets a Battery Charge Limit control in the latest Beta 2 months ago:
IDK about non issue. I have a framework laptop, and even though the battery is very easily replaceable, I still set the charge limit to 80%.
I don’t require the extra charge the majority of the time, and now I don’t have to worry about replacing my battery for a much longer period of time.
Though I agree, for as serviceable as the steam deck is, a little more attention could’ve been paid to the battery situation.

I didn’t know that about crowdsource, I definitely thought it was just another of the same. Glad to hear it isn’t.
I didn’t think about the increased resolution making the RAM increase more relevant.
Good note about the preheater, I honestly haven’t looked deeply into the procedure. Looks like you can get into a crappy preheater on Amazon for not too much. For a one off thing its not so bad 🤷♂️

Hey thanks for the write-up!
Glad I had it kind of almost correct 😬 Sorry if I implied that you weren’t popular enough to make it work. I really was just guessing based on the numbers and a vague idea of “I guess he needs x amount of money to make it happen.” I’ve been burned on a couple kick starters, so I was a bit pessimistic on what might constitute “success”.
I really do like the project, and my buddies kid heard about your project and bought it as well, he found it organically by himself, I was amazed.
I’m glad you’ve taken this personal project and put it out into the world. I’m excited to get my kit, I bought a clear shell and I plan to leave my LCD in the old shell, so I don’t rush destroying it.
An install service is a nice idea, to give more people access. But that also sounds like a lot of work, depending on how popular it is.
I’m fairly handy with a heat gun and soldering iron. I’ve kicked around the idea of the RAM increase, but I’m not convinced the performance boost is worth the effort and risk.
Anywho thanks again! Looking forward to more cool stuff from your way!

Thanks, I hope you can buy one too. Is this something you could buy and have forwarded to you?
If you need a US address, and someone to forward it to you, feel free to PM me 👍
The only cred I have on here is from a guy I met in Canada to sell some phones to. But I promise I’m trustworthy haha

It takes money to make money. The whole project is a bit of a gamble. While paying for CE certification would probably pay off if this thing got popular, if it flops as a whole, then it would flop even harder.
Basically, because it costs more to do, it’s an even bigger gamble. Even though it could work out, they must’ve done the math and said, hmmm, let’s wait and get some legs under us first.
Heck, interest stalled out already and they barely made their funding. I feel like everyone who was gonna buy one, in the US anyway, has bought one. So how much bigger would Europe be for them? And how much does it cost to get CE certification? I don’t know the answers to these questions. But it’s foggy enough that I can see why they might not want to do it just yet.
For the record I bought one 🤷♂️

I agree with you on this point completely. The article is pretty garbage. But that’s not what your original comment seemed to imply. It seemed like you were saying everyone should know this stuff so why should any article exist on the subject.
I think that’s why everyone is so worked up.
- Comment on Why are there so many different Proton versions? Proton 8, Proton 9, Experimental, GE-Proton 6 months ago:
Everyone has to learn something for the first time. Today’s 10,000 and all that.
- Comment on Might as well get a laptop??? 6 months ago:
That’s what I said the second I saw it. Too big to be practically portable, for me anyway. So it’s basically a bigger steam deck that you only use at home. Not a bad idea, but not worth what they are charging for it, not for me anyway.
Lately I’ve been using an 8 year old 13" Chromebook and an old xbone controller to stream steam games from my PC to my couch.
No it’s not portable, but it’s all I would use it for anyway, and it cost me nothing but the parts I had laying around. Anyone else could probably do the same thing for just $100-200. Not $1000+.
I’m not against buying new stuff, and new technology. But it’s not always needed. For me anyway 🤷♂️

Thanks. I’ll look into it, I’ve got plans to repurpose an old wiiu into a deck-like couch gaming machine.
Right now my wife is using the Deck pretty heavily, so I’m using steam to stream a game to my old Chromebook, it’s working pretty well actually 🤷♂️

Honest question, never used anything else
- Comment on Steam deck LAN? And game suggestions? 6 months ago:
Hmm maybe I’ll have to look into it again. I remember trying it once a year or two ago, and running into some known bug where it looked like it was gonna work, but never did. Updates happen though. I’m fine with doing it from desktop mode, if it works. Kludgy, but I can understand it’s not a priority to implement.
- Comment on Steam deck LAN? And game suggestions? 6 months ago:
Have they still not fixed or properly implemented adhoc Wi-Fi yet? Seems like a fairly big deal. Especially if you and your spouse are on a plane or train or something.
I mean, you could always use one of those pocket Wi-Fi routers. I keep one in my travel bag at all times for hotel Wi-Fi that tries to limit the number of devices, and to bypass the Wi-Fi login screen for my Chromecast that I also keep with me.

Turns out it was my resolution settings. I updated the OP to explain, but basically steam was using my crappy low res auxiliary monitor as primary somehow 🤷♂️

All my stuttering and audio issues went away when I switched to gigabit LAN, FYI
- Comment on Wife was using the Deck, I wanted to play on the couch, I had to get creative 6 months ago:
That’s weird. Just yesterday my stream audio started cutting out randomly. Very very annoying. I’ve fiddled with the settings, but so far no solution but to wait and hope it stabilizes. And if it doesn’t? Sometimes it cuts out completely for 5 or 10 seconds? Restart the stream and it comes back.
If this keeps up I’ll have to consider the experience a failure.
