Linux is more open than Android. Hell, you could argue Windows is in its own way. At least you get Admin on Windows and can do whatever you want with it.

They’re almost always used business drives. Oldest one is now 4 years running.

Businesses replace drives and systems on a schedule regardless of true wear on them - their risk vs cost metric is very different than ours.
So used business hardware is a great value for those of us who have a sunk cost in labor/expertise.
Most drives I’ve owned have run for 10+ years, while any business won’t run them past 5. I can take the risk of losing a drive, while it’s more important for a business to prevent losing a drive. Business disruption is a more costly event.

Offline drives fail at least as often (and probably more often) than hot drives.
This is largely from anecdotal experience, but also from an article written by a drive engineer 20+ years ago.
And it matches my own experience with complex mechanical systems I’ve maintained. Lubricants are a major problem for mechanical systems that sit unused - best practice is to either run them on a cycle, or be prepared to disassemble, clean, and re-lubricate after a period of non-use.
Even tape has risk when sitting unused.
Multiple copies on live systems with error detection/correction storage systems is where it’s at.
In the last year I’ve seen bit flips on data that’s stored in 3 locations, because my master data store doesn’t reside on a robust error correcting file system - and that’s at measly single-digit terabytes.

While Iagree (and I’m largely degoogled for a couple years now), there are a few things that make it quite a pain.
Maps being the biggest one. I have 5 mapping apps (CoMaps, Magic Earth, CoPilot, Organic, Waze and Gmaps) and even the combo of them doesn’t approach what GMaps can do, unfortunately.
I’ve paid for CoPilot to have true offline mapping, I would pay for an app that can do what GMaps does.
But the average person will have a real hard time de-googling, unfortunately. Google has done an exceptional job locking people in.

Hey, a real keyboard is a massive change.
SD isn’t needed like it used to be, my current phone (old Pixel) is 128gb, all my personal data is synced to home automatically. Anything extra I need I can grab via Resilio Sync.
An SD slot would be nice to have, but since you can’t do things like change them on the fly they have their own limitations.
Removable battery is less of an issue too. Batteries have gotten better, and OS efficiency has improved tremendously. Replacing a battery is pretty straightforward anymore, I haven’t broken a screen doing it in years.

I still use Publisher - for simple page layout (think label print jobs) it’s way better than word, even with templates.
I thought they’d dropped it years ago, haha - I’m still using a 2016 version. Those offus who use it have been a tiny minority since before it was a Microsoft product (I was using Publisher about 2 years before MS acquired it).
Definitely not a “popular piece of software” - never was.
Shame it’s going away though, I’ve always tried to get people to use it it instead of word when they’re trying to do page layout.
MS never really promoted/exposed it to consumers. It was never really a part of office, for example.
