I’m not sure I understand. Dbrand made a steam machine skin that looks like a companion cube from portal. Valve made the portal games, and thus owns the rights to the companion cube. So valve can make a companion cube skin because they already own the rights to it. Dbrand cannot because they didn’t license it with valve.

Valve made the portal games. So they own the rights to the companion cube and can absolutely make this. That is why they sent the cease and desist order to dbrand.
- Comment on Valve dropped that Steam Machine Companion Cube case down the legal incinerator after its makers neglected to get their permission 1 week ago:
They can make a case, but they can’t make a case that profits off of property and designs that are owned by valve, which the companion cube is. The normal process would be to reach out to valve and request a license to produce it. Dbrand didn’t do that, and valve told them to stop.
Whether you agree with IP laws or not, this is how the laws currently function and dbrand has to know that. So this was a really stupid blunder for them to make.
- Comment on A Steam Machine update reignited release date fears, but Valve say the new hardware is still shipping this year 3 months ago:
What makes you think anything Microsoft builds or releases will be anything but mediocre garbage? Have you seen what they have been doing lately?
