i didn’t realize it was such a delicate process. I knew catastrophic failures could cause data loss. Especially while reading or writing, but I didn’t know that could be the case just opening and repairing the drive. TIL

Right, but this is for archival storage, so if the drive fails, the data is still present on the physical platters. All you need to do is repair the drive. Am I mistaken?

Hot take: All critical data preservation should be HDD and exist in 2 physical locations in an offline state. If its not important enough to spend that amount of capital on preservation, then it should be made public and the preservation responsibilities then fall on torrents.

Well, you could potentially get a cheap office special PC to use as a guinea pig. (Depending on what it takes to run this software)
