- Comment on For users with public facing services: How does the current explosion of AI-discovered vulnerabilities affect your threat model and willingness to be public facing? 2 hours ago:
The only thing I have exposed is my VPN, so no change here.
- Comment on cheap remote kvm 2 days ago:
Does it support vPro or whatever the AMD equivalent is? I know it exists, but I’ve never set them up or used them.
- Comment on Netbird and Pihole 2 days ago:
It’s for his business
Nope. Nope nope nope. You don’t want to be the one responsible for anything when he and his employees are having problems, especially at odd hours or when you’re not around to fix something.
- Comment on Plex vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild to drop a cryptominer 3 days ago:
Even without data compromise or pivoting, they can still mine crypto on your hardware, launch a ddos, spam email, do botnet stuff, or host CSAM.
- Comment on Plex vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild to drop a cryptominer 3 days ago:
I’m guessing this requires it be exposed to the Internet. Please stop exposing services to the Internet.
- Comment on problems with AR8151 onboard LAN 5 days ago:
Does it persist if you change the cable, the device on the far side, the OS? What’s in the log when it drops?
- Comment on PSA to Home Assistant users 5 days ago:
No, your credentials have not been “hoovered up”. A hash is not reversible, and a partial hash would match far too many potential passwords to be any more accurate than random guesses.
Still, uploading any data, especially identifying data, should absolutely not be enabled by default.
- Comment on Is anyone self-hosting their own AI? 5 days ago:
It’s scheduled maintenance so it doesn’t count toward downtime. Besides, I’m not trying to use it then anyway.
- Comment on Any DDNS recommendations? 5 days ago:
Yes, there was a thread just yesterday with a bunch, and I’m sure you can find more with a search
- Comment on Wattroom for bike training 5 days ago:
The linked page says it supports Chrome on Android.
I wouldn’t expect too much support, though. The biggest contributor to that project is AI.
- Comment on Finally escaping Windows, ironically thanks to AI 6 days ago:
Yeah that’s the proper way to do it.
There’s a guy at work constantly asking AI everything on his second screen. He came to me after failing to figure out an issue using it. I said “oh yeah let’s look at the documentation, I bet there’s an example for this exact scenario” and sure enough there was. Made the change, tested and working.
On the other hand, any time I want to do something with Ansible, I start off reading the docs, can’t find what I need, scour a bunch of search results, and when that fails somehow AI can produce a working example of what I need in a few tries.
- Comment on ISP won't set up static IP - Services keep going down 1 week ago:
Why not run just the VPN on the VPS instead of opening everything directly?
- Comment on 1 week ago:
Opnsense on whatever. Plus pihole for DNS/adblock.
- Comment on Which domain registry or specific TLD do you prefer, and why? 1 week ago:
it’s really easy to set up secondary nameservers as a mirror
You assume a resolver will actually proceed to the secondary ns and not just give up when the first one is down. There is a lot of badly-behaved software out there.

Yes.

Anubis provides a non-cutesy version. The only one dying on a hill here is you guys refusing to consider it.
- Comment on How can self-hosted software make money without hurting the ecosystem? 1 week ago:
Use whatever channel the developer provides.
Everyone deserves to be paid for their labor, since we don’t live in a post-scarcity world.
- Comment on My *arrstack is setup properly but downloading is not working 1 week ago:
There are no available seeders on that torrent. Pick a different one.
- Comment on Dedicated admin account or normal privileged users? 1 week ago:
I certainly wouldn’t give people admin. Too much risk of them accidentally breaking stuff.
- Comment on How do you monitor your servers? 1 week ago:
Setting up the newfangled security thing. TLS, DKIM, DMARC, SPF are the big ones over the years. Finding out you’ve been silently blackisted by a provider and hoping and praying they’ll answer your request to unblock. Managing your own spam filter.
- Comment on How do you monitor your servers? 2 weeks ago:
I pay a group of schoolchildren to refresh a group of browser tabs and yell if anything isn’t responding.
There are plenty of previous threads with recent answers if you search.
- Comment on What do you use for alerting? 2 weeks ago:
Yes. My stuff is only for me, so the only way I find out something isn’t working is when I go to use it. But that almost never happens.
The only actual notifications I get is for updates.
- Comment on used hard drive retailers 2 weeks ago:
I buy all of mine used from random people via ebay. I’ve had a few DOA, and a few start throwing errors after a few years. No issues getting replacements or refunds from sellers within the warranty period. Never had one outright fail, nor have I lost any data from this.
I just checked and it turns out two of my drives are over 95,000 hours, that’s nearly 11 years! And they’re still going strong with no errors!
- Comment on Old laptop with non-funtional display... What do I turn it into 2 weeks ago:
Yeah I’d use it as a media PC, but that’s because that’s what I need right now. Otherwise I’d just fuck around with it.
- Comment on Self-Host Weekly (2 October 2026) 2 weeks ago:
What has that got to do with it? I’m still going to run stuff on my own hardware regardless of what AI companies are doing.
