SparroHawc@lemmy.zip 1 week agoAt this point, you can’t even participate in several aspects of society without a smartphone. A lot of concerts and the like have digital-only tickets. You can’t even get cheap McD’s food without using their stupid app; their deals are all digital now.

NGL, I’m at the age where I seldom hear acts that I’d go see anymore (last gig I saw was bassist Tony Levin at a small club and the tickets were 50 bucks, cash at the door…) and the last time I ate at McDonalds, that was over 25 years ago… I was driving home from Pittsburgh, Pennsvlvania (I live in the northeast) and got food poisoning that kicked off just as I was getting home. So, no… they can have all the digital enhancements they want, I’ll go hungry before I eat that shit again…
But, I get what you’re saying.
Part of leaving the digital leash behind is that all the businesses jumping on the “cutting edge” of tech adoption, offer shit that you can live without.
Just because someone is selling something does not obligate you to buy it. It’s okay to be a bit standoffish about the things you choose to have in your life, because anyone can cling to a lifestyle but in doing so, they end up slaves to it’s financial demands.
Don’t be slaves to anybody’s fashion.

Those were only two examples of an accelerating trend. But you’re right; if something is actually a necessity, you can largely get it without a smartphone. Society is doing its utmost to make them a necessity though, and it drives me nuts.
