- Comment on 60% of PC gamers have no plans to build a new PC in the next two years — AI pricing crunch on RAM and other components paralyze enthusiast market 1 week ago:
I went looking at parts a few days ago. VERY discouraging. My gaming PC is pretty long in the tooth. It was originally built to be a hackintosh. Is an Asus Gryphon z97 logic board, i7-4790, 32GB ram, a 1 tB SSD and a second WD Green HDD for stoarge and a GTX3060 (with 12GB of memory!) that I push a 4k display (30fps) with, and Win 10 Pro…
The cost of new parts - FML!
Needless to say I’m not picking up any new AAA gaming title anytime soon. :(

LOL!
I’m sorry for laughing… but that must’ve been a blast to witness!

LOL! They probably would! Ahh, I’m just going to give it hell with the snippers and clippers.

Oh God bless you! Alas, I’m on the gloriously small coast of New Hampshire. Thanks though!
Was hoping to get a few hours in tonight but got into a long rambling conversation with the kid that lives upstairs and it’s gotten dark. Ack!
Maybe tomorrow if I can manage to get my butt out of bed early enough I can be done with my work before the weather rolls in. Rain expected for the next few days. Not going to complain too hard about it though. We sorely need it.

NGL, I’m at the age where I seldom hear acts that I’d go see anymore (last gig I saw was bassist Tony Levin at a small club and the tickets were 50 bucks, cash at the door…) and the last time I ate at McDonalds, that was over 25 years ago… I was driving home from Pittsburgh, Pennsvlvania (I live in the northeast) and got food poisoning that kicked off just as I was getting home. So, no… they can have all the digital enhancements they want, I’ll go hungry before I eat that shit again…
But, I get what you’re saying.
Part of leaving the digital leash behind is that all the businesses jumping on the “cutting edge” of tech adoption, offer shit that you can live without.
Just because someone is selling something does not obligate you to buy it. It’s okay to be a bit standoffish about the things you choose to have in your life, because anyone can cling to a lifestyle but in doing so, they end up slaves to it’s financial demands.
Don’t be slaves to anybody’s fashion.

Good God… I’d love for some help with the yard work. There is no lawn whatsoever so mowing is out but the wild roses and the bittersweet is consuming the back yard somwthing fierce. It’s like gonna eat any animals that pass by consuming.
Got a house full of other apartment tenants who always say, “I’ll help!” yet never do. Shit, they don’t even put their recycling and garbage from the porch to the curb… I have to.
FML.

I’m with you on that.
My current phone is small enough that it’s difficult for me to do much on it - eyesight being the main culpit on that - and it’s actually a good deal for me!
Keeps me from using the phone online and my computers are old enough with unsupported OS installs, that the current crop of online services run so murderously slow I avoid them.
(Part of why I’m on old.lemmy.zip. Basic text, easy to read, runs on old kit w/o hassle.)
I use my oldest phones as glorified iPods and have an iPhone 3GS doing service as a nighttime sound generator (I have wicked tinnitus) - for over a decade now.

Not to get too snarky about this, but at the point where the mobile internet is locked down to such an absurd degree, maybe it’s time for people to just stop using smartphones and opt for flip phones instead, then get a budget laptop or desktop and call it good.
The more the tech becomes entrenched, the more points open up for assholes to take economic advantage. Time to stop playing this game.
There are already people being forced to use their smartphones to access their apartments - AND being charged upwards of 70 bucks a month for the privilege. Seriously.
Sorry… need a keyed lock. I only have a flip phone that doesn’t use apps.
Fuck this shit.

I hate to say this, but as long as you are doing anything other than walking into a grocery store and paying with cash, you will have NO privacy and will be taken advantage of.
Just no.
If someone is broke, the dead last thing they want to do is use any kind of online service to buy food with. There’s too much opportunism in these companies… End stage capitalism means that in order to protect yourself, you HAVE to cut out any middlemen.
This is not up for debate, the article proves it.

Ok, thats good to know. The limited access to Linux I’ve dabbled with in the past used Gnome - which was fine - but I’m always up for learning something new.

I recommend picking the dropdown to not boot into Steam Gaming Mode.
Good to know…
Thank you!

Exasperated Sigh
LOL! Sorry! Newbie nitwittery on the loose!
I’m actually an over four-decades long Apple user who’s main usage was graphics and music.
The PC was a former hackintosh running El Capitan and used for video production and Aperture… I bought it from the guy that built it and slapped Win 10 into it just to game on. (I did add the nVidia 3060…) Not really familiar with things outside of the Apple ecosystem, but I’m now fed up with the constant churn there and looking to expand into new territory.
I saw SteamOS mentioned and tucked it away in the back of my head and just remembered to ask about it earlier.
So now I know! You gotta ask somewhere no? So it might as well be here…
Am going to suss out the Bazzite and probably add it on a separate SSD - I have connectors for 3 drives in the PC and a Thunderbolt expansion card which may or may not work that is currently in a drawer with the USB 3 card…
Dual boot, (which I do use on my old MacPros) shouldn’t be a problem on the PC - I do that from the PC’s UEFI, amirite? - so I will keep the Windows install and just play with the Bazzite until I get comfy with it.
Thanks!

Penguins it is then!
I’m currenty an Apple user looking at the EOL of my ancient indestructible Intel kit (my newest Mac is a 2010 MBP which is running an unsupported macOS install) and deciding that, given Apple’s interminably frustrating OS decisions (walled gardens and all that rubbish…) on top of their switching yet again to a different platform - Apple SIlicon - that Linux is going to be my next adveture in OSes…
Will start with the PC and Bazzite, and may need a bit of help, as while I do know a few Terminal commands in the Mac, the PC presents a bit of a mystery (though I hope it’s gonna be less alien than I think, once the Linux OS is in…)
Much thanks to everone!
