TIL, how cool. I never even thought about it not being a tiny piezo or something.
Comment on If you drop (or throw) your new Steam Controller it will scream at you
Kaiserschmarrn@feddit.org 2 weeks agoThe controller doesn’t have a speaker. The sound is produced by its haptic motors.

If that were enough to burn out haptic motors, they would burn out after only a couple hours of use.

using linear actuators for sound isn’t that novel or crazy. it’s also not that bad at all for the actuators. you are just responding to everyone with “that doesn’t make sense to me”
well that’s cool, but it will make sense if you go learn.

I think you would break your controller from dropping it so much before the haptics became an issue.
SavinDWhales@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Uh. I think it does. You can page it in case you’ve misplaced it and it will ring.
Also, on/off sounds, etc.
Kaiserschmarrn@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
No, it doesn’t. These sounds are all done by the haptic motors.

The og did all of that through haptics, it worked really well. don’t see cutouts in the case for a speaker and I didn’t see any mention on ifixit, feel like valve would have listed it in the specs.
