I heard that it was to limit leaks as well, which makes a lot of sense but IDK why they didn't do that last year.

It’s not about the leaks. Leaks happen regardless of remote or not. Hell you have more oversight in place when someone is pulling documents from outside the office as opposed to random computers inside the office.
