Google Maps will rename Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America in the U.S.. However, users in Mexico will see “Gulf of Mexico,” and the rest of its 1 billion monthly users will see both names.

Also Google on 2008: “Google in 2008: By saying “common”, we mean to include names which are in widespread daily use, rather than giving immediate recognition to any arbitrary governmental re-naming. In other words, if a ruler announced that henceforth the Pacific Ocean would be named after her mother, we would not add that placemark unless and until the name came into common usage.”

    Okay. But…

    Why?

Not as in why do it, I know exactly why and posted about it earlier. It’s TERRIFYING. It’s REALLY bad.

But as in “why comply?” Fuck is Trump gonna do or not do that Google’s so fuckin’ interested in. Man fuck this guy and fuck google. I already don’t use them as much as I can, but FUCK THEM.

Well, maybe because this is just an empty symbolic gesture made exactly to trigger progressives and let the MAGAs cheer about their “victory”.

Google maps uses whatever the name of the feature in question is in the language of the user. For me, it’s not “Gulf of Mexico”, but Golf von Mexiko, and if you visit Europe (as an English user), you’ll see Munich in Bavaria in Germany, not München in Bayern in Deutschland, as would be correct.

Trump could order a penis be drawn over the Atlantic ocean and Google Maps would comply. That’s what happens in fascist countries where the powers that be and corporations are in cahoots.

See point 9. of the 14 characteristics of fascism.

Every American should report the inaccurate name to Google repeatedly until they change it back. How many reports would it take to at least inconvenience Google.

It’d just result in a filter on all reports on that location. Only thing being inconvenienced is one programmer.
