looks like early 2000s they stopped horsing around with the data. also, i like this was posted on the technology community, where horses have been inversely related historically

It’s embarrassing to show data with huge artifacts like that. Obvious change in reporting methods because there was no horse baby boom.
Something is shit in the data around 2001 and rather than explain/correct it, they just put up a turd.

That’s one case where the absolute numbers will be more meaningful and the per capita won’t give much information. China has a greater population, and this dilutes the horses per capita number, and any variation like the increase in the USA curve in the 2000s or the overall decline in the China curve becomes ambiguous without looking at the population data.
