I don’t put much stock in most AI stuff but I think what is interesting is integrating automated and semi automated obstacle avoidance into LIDAR systems for aircraft for two big reasons over equivalent self driving car stuff.

  1. What is an obstacle and what isn’t is a subjective question to a land vehicle in a way that it isn’t with an air vehicle.

  2. Most of the time it can be assumed that going up to avoid something is relatively safe while in a helicopter, there is no equivalent with land vehicle where even breaking too quickly can be dangerous.

Up to date high resolution local LIDAR maps are strategic data both for attacker and defender.
