The PC release of the game on Steam didn’t originally need you to link it to a PSN account in order to play. They’re about to make it mandatory, which will do two things: make it stupidly hard for players from certain countries to play as they can’t legally sign up for a PSN account; and also mean your data will be more vulnerable given how many times PSN has had data breaches.

I thought it was mandatory at release, but added a skip button when the login servers couldn’t handle the traffic at launch. They’re trying to re-enforce it now.
Its just scummy because of the reasons listed above and people lost their refund window when it was optional. It’s mentioned on the steam page. But IMHO there’s a difference between needing a 3rd party account to play the game and linking it to steam which would give them access to more data than you’ll want to share.

Not trying to dismiss this issue but looking for more info: illegal as in, their country outlaws using the service? Or Sony does not allow citizens of that country to make an account? If it’s the former, were these people even allowed to download the game through Steam legally? If the latter, is there any reason to care, other than potentially getting banned?

Requiring all players make a PSN account to keep playing.
PSN is notorious for two things:
A) Leaking your data
B) SELLING your data
It’s an account that has absolutely no benefits to own (apart from making a company line go up), is about as anti-privacy as it gets, and also makes the game straight up unplayable if you’re from a region of the world that doesn’t have PSN.

They should have taken the lumps on release when they couldn’t keep up with the demand to play and kept the Sony login requirement. It was there on day one but people couldn’t get in to make accounts so they suspended it. That was a mistake if this was going to be mandatory in the end. They also really screwed up by releasing the game in regions that don’t have PSN, how did that even happen is the big question I want to know.
On the other hand, waving it and allowing people to play it without the 3rd party requirement also showed it’s a crappy requirement that doesn’t seem to do much other than annoy people to allow Sony to collect data. Sony also looks like assholes by changing their web page from “login is optional to play Sony titles on PC” to “some games require login.”
Disclaimer here, I have a PSN account because I’ve owned multiple past Sony consoles so I’m not really affected so much, they already lost and sold my data multiple times. For everybody else, I get why they are pissed.

As a long term PC gamer, two things.
Almost every game out there, made in recent years has had some login component with a publisher type service. Ubisoft, rockstar, Microsoft, etc. So this behaviour isn’t entirely unprecedented.
On the other hand:
Pretty much every single one of those PC versions that have publisher logins, will let you play without logging in. You will sometimes be feature limited, or you will be unable to obtain certain rewards or something… Some only allow you to unlock DLC after you’ve signed in… Stuff like that. The game can still be played, at some diminished capacity, but it can be played.
Making it a hard requirement, crosses a line for many. If it’s optional, sure, those who can’t or won’t get an account are still able to play, most will likely get an account to ensure they have the full experience.
I might be wrong, but I can’t recall any game that would refuse to launch the game without an account. You’ll get bugged about it a bit, but it still runs. The only exception I can give to this is any MMO which requires a subscription to the game in order to play; the most notable example of this is WoW. In those cases, you need an account to subscribe to the game in order to play. Almost always, the subscription fee is the cost of the game, so you don’t buy the game, and then pay a subscription to play online… Unless it’s a Nintendo game, I suppose.

Would this be happening if it was Halo on PC? I remember that announcement being celebrated.
tb_@lemmy.world 6 months ago
How do you mean, Halo is already on PC?
And the issue isn’t the account linking in and of itself, but this being a sudden requirement after the game has already come out and people have already purchased the game.
On top of that: PlayStation accounts are unavailable in many countries where this game has already been sold. Where it may have been a deal-breaker for some, others will effectively be locked out if no change to the policy is made.
Either way, adding this requirement after already having sold the game is ridiculous.

My brother bought me halo and I did need to link to microsoft. Would have never bought it but it was a gift, and I’ll choose quality time with my bro over dying on hills.

The requirement was stated before release in the store page in a bright yellow warning message. It was supposed to be on launch but it seems there were issues with it.

True. I’m not on your “server” and I wont join just to read a message that’s intented for all. Post it on steam or (better) your hp and google can find it. If google can find it everybody can read read it without joining a service they dont want. Discord is a data trap. Pls stop using it like a webpage. It doesn’t work like that and is not intented to.
Quacksalber@sh.itjust.works 6 months ago
That line was adressed at Sony, not the players.
letsgo@lemm.ee 6 months ago
True but the sentiment is real. It’s only a matter of time before Discord enshittifies and people need to stop being dependent on it.
