- Comment on Steam Winter Sale 2024 Has Begun! 1 day ago:
Side note, the artist for these sales events this year has been smashing it. The winter main page is the best yet.

One of the best things you can do is actually your habit, not anything with actual Deck.
The Deck cases come with a pair of zippers.
To remove your possibility of accidentally moving the case while it’s open (which has been done by a ton of people), get into the habit of closing it by meeting both zippers in the middle.
Once you are in that habit, that serves as your visual confirmation of the Deck case being definitively closed, as there’s really no way to meet those zippers in the middle while the case is still open.
About to pick up your case, but don’t see the twin zippers in the middle? STOP. Confirm that the case is closed before you pick it up and move it.
I know a lot of people recommend the “Deck Lifesaver,” but it’s really not needed as long as you properly use the built-in features of the case.
- Comment on [help] Getting my first steam deck tomorrow 6 days ago:
YW! It shuts down either with the Steam button menu like any other app or game, or you can double click the Return to Gaming Mode icon. Either one.
- Comment on Decksight, an OLED screen replacement for LCD decks, is now in crowdfunding 1 week ago:
For me, these are the kinds of things that are nice to have if my native screen dies anyway somehow, and I would have replaced it no matter what. The more options the better in that scenario.
But to change out the screen just because it’s possible? Nah dawg I’m good.
- Comment on [help] Getting my first steam deck tomorrow 1 week ago:
A thing to do: Look up how to install Nested Desktop into Gaming Mode (a quick YouTube video will show you how to set it up in about two minutes). In short, it allows you to access most of the functionality of Desktop Mode when you need those things, without actually having to officially switch over (think of it as Gaming Mode’s Desktop Mode Emulator).
Saves you bunches of time in the switching back and forth, as it’s almost instantaneous. I use it all the time, as stuff like web browsers also work better on the Desktop side.
As for casual games you can play for short bursts and put to sleep whenever… you already mentioned Balatro, that’s a great one. I love roguelikes and deck builders for this purpose in general. Recently, I’ve been playing a ton of Cobalt Core, I’d highly recommend as a great pick up and play and quick stop.
- Comment on [Discussion] What games are you playing on your deck? - December 2024 2 weeks ago:
One of the games I picked up on Steam Sale was Cobalt Core. Fantastic game, it ate my entire Thanksgiving break lol
- Comment on Will there be a restock on the white OLED steam deck? 2 weeks ago:
You could get a regular OLED Steam Deck and a good clean white skin and come out pretty close, except for the gray tones on the buttons and such.
- Comment on [Discussion] Steam Autumn Sale has started. What are you buying for your Steam Deck? 2 weeks ago:
If you’re in the US, I’m not sure you’re looking in the correct place?
Take that link (Steam Deck page on the Steam store), scroll down a little bit. Red banner says “On Sale Through December 4th.” To the right are the 64GB LCD Deck, which is out of stock, and the 512GB LCD Deck, which is still discounted to $336.75 and has a Buy Now button under it. I was, seconds ago, able to add it to my Steam cart and remove it.
- Comment on [Discussion] Steam Autumn Sale has started. What are you buying for your Steam Deck? 3 weeks ago:
The 64 GB version is sold out. The 512 GB is still in stock, at least it’s showing as so for me in the US.
- Comment on [Discussion] Steam Autumn Sale has started. What are you buying for your Steam Deck? 3 weeks ago:
The 512 LCD Deck is a stupidly good deal at 25% off… $330 USD is crazy cheap for a new Deck, and that’s a solid amount of starting storage space before you even move to grab an SD card.
I own both in the household, and while I do enjoy some of the OLED Deck’s improved features, the original is NOT a slouch… I wouldn’t sleep on it! The display is MUCH better than it was at launch thanks to software fixes, and the screen can safely be overclocked from the base 60 Hz up to to 70 Hz with minimal effort, further reducing the gap between the models (OLED is 90 Hz).
Since I own both, I can tell you what you’d mainly be missing taking the LCD: basically you’d giving up battery length (OLED is about 25% better on battery life… but the whole issue is mute if you primarily play older games, or mostly play while plugged in), about a half inch of diagonal screen real estate, a somewhat less precise touch screen, and taking a slightly older Bluetooth adapter in the unit. In exchange for this, you get a new Deck for more than $200 less than the base OLED will cost.
Otherwise, these two are very similar, so it’s a very good time to get a Deck.
- Comment on Leak: Valve is making a Steam Controller 2 and a ‘Roy’ for its Deckard 4 weeks ago:
Like others, I’d rather see a Steam Deck Controller than an actual Steam Controller 2 that’s heavily based on the original. But they’d probably sell a bazillion of either.
- Comment on An OLED Mod For The Original Steam Deck Is Being Made - Steam Deck HQ 1 month ago:
Or at 720p, as this is a 16:9 aspect ration and running stuff on it at 16:10 will look weird.
- Comment on Apex Legends is taking away its support for the Steam Deck and Linux 1 month ago:
Yep, precisely why I don’t play kernel anticheat games.
Considering 99.9999% of all the games out there don’t have it, and I have a selection of games large enough to last a lifetime, I don’t lose sleep over that decision.
- Comment on When the Steam Deck was still just an idea, Valve says some staff were like, "I just want that for me" and "the point wasn't even to make a product out of it" 1 month ago:
I second the recent PlayStation controllers. My friend gave me an extra PS4 controller he had and it’s basically a Deck controller minus the back buttons and a track pad. Works fine for most games I play with it, but I’m primarily a M&K guy.
- Comment on LCD Steam Decks on sale. 64GB LCD (15% off - $296.65) and LCD 512GB LCD (25% off - $336.75) 3 months ago:
At those price points, it would make no sense to get the 64… get the 512. Unless you already have alternate storage sitting around ready to install.
If you got the 64 with a 512 micro SD card, you’d be in for about the same money, give or take no more than $10. You may as well have the faster SSD instead.
- Comment on How good is the Steam Deck really? (Not a gamer) 3 months ago:
I love mine so much that I didn’t bother replacing my old laptop after it died, I just bought a dock, pulled an old Bluetooth mouse and keyboard out of storage, and the Deck is my daily driver now.
I have fantastic experiences playing mine. I recently upgraded to the OLED and gave the old LCD to a friend, and now he’s addicted to PC gaming as well. We play stuff every weekend, opening Steam voice calls is built right into the UI and it’s a fantastic experience. If you are thinking about getting into gaming, or gifting one to a gamer, I can’t recommend it enough.
- Comment on If you have DeckHD (Steam Deck Display Mod) will now be officially supported 4 months ago:
Exactly. It’s not like you’d be playing a ton of stuff on the Deck at 1200p if you had this screen… but it’d be nice to have the option for older games that don’t need a ton of power at that resolution.
- Comment on How do you use the built in microphones? [Update] 5 months ago:
I’ve used it before when playing non-docked (otherwise I have a Blue yeti condenser mic hooked up into my docking hub).
The people I was playing with said I sounded good and clear. I’ve used it both with Discord and with Steam voice chat and I’ve never had an issue.
- Comment on Hori Announces Controller Made Specifically for Steam 5 months ago:
I said it elsewhere, but it’s almost like they looked at the market research showing Steam PC gamers would buy a gazillion Steam Controller 2s or Steam Deck Controllers if they made and sold either one, or both.
And then they decided to make something that was neither one of those things. It’s totally bizarre.
- Comment on Microsoft Gaming CEO: “I think we should have a handheld, too” 6 months ago:
Why would anyone buy this? You can already do this streaming through the Deck or any of the other handhelds, if Game Pass is your thing.
- Comment on Selling my deck 1 year ago:
Sorry friend, Valve absolutely cratered the resale value of LCD Decks with the OLED launch and restructuring.
I was considering selling my Deck and moving to the Go in the days before the announcement, and the very day I decided to sell, Valve put out that press release. Instantly new LCD Decks were $150ish cheaper, so that just comes right off the top of what you could get for a used one.

The only thing worse than scalpers are people who buy from scalpers and perpetuate the cycle of scalping.
- Comment on What are your favourite casual games on the steam deck? 1 year ago:
Be sure to check community control layouts, and not just the default.
I’ve had several games I thought would be terrible on a controller, only to discover someone had invented an ingenious and intuitive layout already.
- Comment on Steam Deck as a laptop replacement? 1 year ago:
It actually did replace my laptop when I got it last year. My dying, ancient laptop finally kicked it just a couple of days before the Deck arrived. I never had one iota of desire to get another laptop.
Of course our use cases are radically different, but I think that displays the versatility quite well.
- Comment on Keyboard shortcut for accessing the Steam menu 1 year ago:
In gaming mode, you can use Ctrl-1 and Ctrl-2 to access the menus, but for reasons unknown, these don’t work in-game.
In desktop mode, if you dock the Deck, you can try changing the display settings manually if it doesn’t auto-adjust. This is under the System Settings app.
- Comment on Supposed Steam Deck killers are missing the point 1 year ago:
Absolutely. Valve is the only player in this game that doesn’t have to turn their profits on the actual devices themselves.
And Valve’s definitely turning backflips that tons of people are entering the PC gaming space and Steam store on handhelds that Valve didn’t have to subsidize.
- Comment on [Discussion] With the recent rumors of a possible hardware refresh, what are your most hoped for changes in an updated Steam Deck? 1 year ago:
I’ll take a larger screen, the 7" is far too tiny for me for almost any game with text or captioning. Something in the 9" or slightly larger range would be golden, and you could get most of the way there by getting rid of the bezels. the actual Deck itself wouldn’t have to be that much bigger to accommodate the rest.
- Comment on Should I get a Steam Deck? 1 year ago:
Being a 40s gamer with bad eyes, the only thing I dislike about the Deck is the small screen size, which keeps me from using it handheld as much as I’d like to.
But it’s my only PC currently, and it’s fantastic docked with Bluetooth M&K. In every other way but the native screen, it’s exceeded my expectations.
Down the road when it’s time to upgrade, I’ll probably get a device with a larger screen, but I will always love the Deck, which has convinced me that I’ll probably never main a laptop again.
- Comment on [Discussion] New month, new games. What are you playing on your deck? - September 2023 1 year ago:
Don’t sleep on Grim Dawn either. Deep, with a ton of class combos.
- Comment on Over 11,000 games now rated Steam Deck Playable 1 year ago:
I’ve heard that while it’s not exactly SteamOS… ChimeraOS gives a very similar experience, should you own one of those Windows handhelds and don’t want to use Windows primarily on it.
