Distrobox seems to use docker/podman? Not what I’m after, but I’ll read more on it, never heard of it before.
- Comment on Persistent packages on Steam Deck using Nix 2 weeks ago:
The move is intentional, the configuration file I included makes Home Manager manage .bashrc and .bash_profile, the original files are moved for backup.
Ping wouldn’t help that much, there’s around ~30 devices on my network. And it’s very much possible my PC blocks ICMP. And in addition, nmap includes the manufacturer in the output which is what I wanted to base my guess on.
- Comment on Persistent packages on Steam Deck using Nix 2 weeks ago:
And if anyone’s interested in what prompted the writing of this guide, I wanted to play Palworld but didn’t know the IP address of the local PC my server is on. I was also really lazy to get the IP address from the PC itself, so I decided to use
nmap
to scan my local network and find the PC that way. Found out nmap is not installed by default so I had to install it somehow and then I remembered that SteamOS added the/nix
directory to its exceptions that survive across upgrades. In short, instead of taking two minutes to get the IP address I spent over half an hour getting nix to work. And decided to share in case it helps others.

- Comment on GOG launch their Preservation Program to make games live forever with hundreds of classics being 're-released' 5 weeks ago:
There are many tools to download all your games (I’ve even created one), you can download your games regularly. Sure, you need the space for it, but you need space for everything you own, be it physical or digital.

It’s not, they just decided they have a right to brag about it. And they do, when I started Dragon Age: Origins today, an update definitely surprised me.
- Comment on Gaming 2024 2 months ago:
I once tried it for work, it was nice, just lying down in a comfortable position and simply moving the screen wherever I wanted it.

Buy a phone controller (like Razer Kishi or Razer Junglecat) and use some streaming technology to play your PC games on phone. My favourite is Sunshine/Moonlight combo, but Steam Link might work as well for you.

Hopefully they’ve turned to better detection tools, those that were available a few months ago marked almost all my genuine texts as AI generated.
- Comment on Windows is Now Officially Supported on OLED Steam Deck 4 months ago:
On the 1st page I found exactly one game that I’d maybe want to play, but not like I couldn’t live without it. None on page 2 and one game again on page 3. Every single game I wanted to play on the Deck works (true, some of them needed some tinkering).
Remember, I said the solution is simple for me. Generally the games that don’t work are not really my cup of tea, like online games and generally stuff that’s more cash-grab than a game. There are few games that would make me consider getting Windows to play, but luckily all of those work well. I still wouldn’t install Windows on the Deck, though, I’d probably stream it from some PC.
- Comment on Windows is Now Officially Supported on OLED Steam Deck 4 months ago:
Well, at least for me the solution is simple: don’t buy those games.

Isn’t that what Heroic does? Or does this do something else (or better)?
- Comment on Microsoft Gaming CEO: “I think we should have a handheld, too” 6 months ago:
I have only positive experience with them. The only downside is it gets hot like hell, but other than that it works spectacularly.

And suddenly I’m more interested in the game.

So, buy, negative review, refund, wait for Sony to remove PSN requirement, profit?
- Comment on No leaving a Steam account in a will after you die according to Valve 6 months ago:
Both of which is equally horrible. Yes, you should be able to give what you bought to anyone, including your brother and it should automatically transfer to whoever you (or your country’s laws) think should get it when you die.
- Comment on No leaving a Steam account in a will after you die according to Valve 6 months ago:
Yeah, but no one’s pretending Epic is good, while the sentiment that Valve is somehow pro-consumer is thrown around a lot.
- Comment on No leaving a Steam account in a will after you die according to Valve 6 months ago:
Can’t wait until the EU explains to them where their place is.
Also, do people of Lemmy still think Steam is the best company ever?
- Comment on Are you using GOG games on your Steam Deck? 6 months ago:
Most games I bought are from GOG and I play them easily on my Steam Deck using Heroic Games Launcher.
Step-by-step:
- Switch to desktop mode
- Open Heroic Games Launcher
- Install game from GOG
- Log in to GOG if you’re not already
- Add the game to Steam launcher using Heroic
- Switch back to gaming mode
- Play

What are those? I’m in EU, never heard of those.

Nice! I’ve been saying for a while that the Steam monopoly needs some regulation. Hopefully the rest of the EU catches up as well.
- Comment on Cory Doctorow: What Kind of Bubble is AI? 8 months ago:
I believe if he tried, he actually could make denying the cookies even worse experience.
Anyway, to the point, sure, AI is overblown way out of proportions. But it’s useful and is here to stay. Like, does someone actually believe that a software that can clone a voice in seconds is going away? Or a software that can generate an image of whatever you want in seconds? Or a software that can predict how valuable your customer is going to be in a year and thus predicting which customers are actually worth spending money on?
Is AI a bubble? Yes. But anyone who thinks that it’s comparable to the crypto bubble doesn’t understand AI, or crypto, or (most likely) both.
- Comment on Playtron plans to launch PlaytronOS, a Linux-based OS for gaming 8 months ago:
Touché. Though the fragmentation brings more issues than user choice solves, IMO. I think people should focus on making SteamOS available everywhere instead of everyone making their own Linux handheld gaming distro.
But who am I to talk, around 5 of my projects were started because I couldn’t be bothered to contribute to other projects and instead opted for a rewrite.
- Comment on Playtron plans to launch PlaytronOS, a Linux-based OS for gaming 8 months ago:
Linux and user base fragmentation, name a more iconic duo. No one is gonna use it anyway.
- Comment on Valve Pleads With Steam Deck Owners to Stop Inhaling Exhaust Fumes 1 year ago:
Heh, same happened to me. In the end I cancelled loading while it wasn’t fully loaded and that helped.
I guess the guy they credited with the translation used AI without them knowing.
