Going with a cheap used system, and then adding an Intel a310 is a good start. For getting drives, look into getting some external Seagate drives, popping them open, and using them internally. Just a couple ideas 😊

Tdarr is a pretty fun automation tool if you Wana try. Basically I down scale to 1080p if it’s higher, then I rencode to av1 at 8mbps or lower depending on current bitrate

Does it help to point out this is vinyl backed foam 😉 really thin vinyl sheet on it, but it helps
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
I get about the same affect by placing a layer of the foam on the wall behind the fans. But you’re totally right. Without that lil bit the fan noise from the intake and exhaust was a lil noticeable

With the big tower cooler it now has in the server it barely touches 80c under load. As for sound, I can take a recording when I get home later this week if anyone’s are still interested

Two of the drives are 18tb I got cheap 😂 so maybe in a decade I’ll get that 8tb of space
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Was just what I was experimenting with when I built it a few years ago. Never gave may issues so I’ve just stayed with it. Would be nice to be able to mismatch my drive size though
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Yea, I definitely would have gone z2, but this all started with the drives, and slowly expanded into this monster. But so far it’s been running smooth. The drives were added at different times to so they shouldn’t fail at the same time (hopefully 😂)

It just had a very undersized cooler at the time (pics of case are hiding here somewhere lol). It would idle normally, but load put it near throttle. Moved to the 9800x3d though in the same case and that performs like a dream

Super quiet, and had been running non stop for over a year no with no problems 😊 also that i9 runs super hot. When it was in my lil gaming rig it was always running up near 90. So retiring to the server had been much more gentle on it, lol
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Plus the other fan hiding behind the system 😉 posted temps in a comment of you eye curious
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Surprisingly the server is pretty good on pretty usage. It pulls about 300-350w from the wall, so probably about $50 a month. For being my security system and media server is pretty cost effective
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Thanks! Has been alot of fun playing with

My dang autocorrect last night refused to use the word temps 😂 caught it on most of my replies, but it slipped past a few times

Oooo, cute mini system! I’ve always wanted to start a cluster with tiny towers like that

Or spaceballs 3, the search for spaceballs 2

It was a common comment after a few hours 😂 also looking forward to spaceballs the sequel!!
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
To be honest, I have more media then I’ll ever need, and after rencoding everything it shouldn’t use even half the space. The a310 is the real goat here for saving space

The whole setup is really quiet actually! The cabinet has an intake fan hiding on the bottom, while the top fan is just exhaust. Then all the fans in the system are built for front to top exhaust. I posted temps while the system is running full tilt of you were curious
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
You gotta do push pull. There’s another fan on the bottom of the cabinet pulling in fresh, while all the hot air is directed up and out. Tennis are more stable then my gaming rig sitting 5 feet away in the open air.
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Posted temps and specs if you were curious 😉 guessing you didn’t think I had more fans in the cabinet
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Thankfully all either used, or bought before the Ai drive prices
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Oh, and if anyone is curious on specs. This is my old gaming rig but it’s: I9 11900k Z590I Vision D ITX mobo 64gb memory The 16x lane is bifurcated to run: Intel a310 Lsi 9305 16e into a hp dl380
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
I’m currently running truenas on it. Simple and free
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
That’s it! Though when I was first seting up my new place 😊 it’s on my comment history so I don’t think that’s snooping
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Theres currently 110 tb of usable space. Got a bunch of 14tb drives when you could shuck them for 150 each
- Comment on Home server 2 weeks ago:
Not if there were a second fan hiding in there 😉
