Excellent heat retention! Doubles as a stove top
There’s actually two fans built into the cabinet! Pulls more fresh air then if it were outside of it. 😎❄️
For those worried about temps. The cpu never goes past the 80s when being ran hard, and drive tennis are comfortably in the 40s
You left in your IP no0b! Now I’m gonna pwn your server with my super hacker skillz xoxoxoxo
P.S. That’s is one hell of a setup! I am surprised how well ventilated it is
I just sent a ddos attack to his ip. In an unrelated event my doorbell camera has stopped working?
Oh, and if anyone is curious on specs. This is my old gaming rig but it’s: I9 11900k Z590I Vision D ITX mobo 64gb memory The 16x lane is bifurcated to run: Intel a310 Lsi 9305 16e into a hp dl380
Bet it’s quiet as fuck tho
Super quiet, and had been running non stop for over a year no with no problems 😊 also that i9 runs super hot. When it was in my lil gaming rig it was always running up near 90. So retiring to the server had been much more gentle on it, lol
Looks like with the doors closed its going to be smokin.
The one fan in the left will do the trick
Plus the other fan hiding behind the system 😉 posted temps in a comment of you eye curious
Bruh your gonna need a blower so loud it totally obliterates that sound protection.
The whole setup is really quiet actually! The cabinet has an intake fan hiding on the bottom, while the top fan is just exhaust. Then all the fans in the system are built for front to top exhaust. I posted temps while the system is running full tilt of you were curious
I assume that’s all sound proofing. How well does it work? And like the other commenter asked, I’m curious how it affects the temperature
how it affects the temperature
positively… 🔥
The sound proofing helps a ton. This sits in my living room and I can barely hear it. There’s also a second fan hiding on the bottom for intake, while the top is just exhaust. Keeps temps nice and cool
Had to check if this was the memes category.
Posted temps and specs if you were curious 😉 guessing you didn’t think I had more fans in the cabinet
bro built an expensive radiator that hosts movies
Thankfully all either used, or bought before the Ai drive prices
what is that “thing” on top of the desktop chassis? a wifi antenna?
not op, but yeah looks like. my old gaming tower is about to get debian installed and go on perma server duty, and the onboard wifi has an antenna like this, which may let me leave it in the garage.
Oof, do NOT run a server over WIFI. If plain old Ethernet is not an option, get something like this which, no, is not cheap but will offer a MUCH better experience.
The one I have that looks like that is bluetooth.
Sorry brother this makes me twitchy. Needs air.
OP posted his numbers and you think you know better.
Bet you’re fun at parties.
Intake fan is hiding in the bottom behind case 😅 of not yea it’d probably melt. I posted temps though if you’re r curious
Oooo, cute mini system! I’ve always wanted to start a cluster with tiny towers like that
There are two fans built into the cabinet. Temps stay nice and cool
It was a common comment after a few hours 😂 also looking forward to spaceballs the sequel!!
Oi. I had mine in my hall closet, looks a lot like yours, including the Noctua cooler and stack of hard drives. In spite of adding a vent to the top of the closet door, and a big gap at the floor it still got too hot. I ended up moving it to the spare bedroom.
You gotta do push pull. There’s another fan on the bottom of the cabinet pulling in fresh, while all the hot air is directed up and out. Tennis are more stable then my gaming rig sitting 5 feet away in the open air.
What part of the world calls temperatures “tennis”? Sounds like something the Aussies would come up with
I am guessing the egg-shell foamed enclosure is for the sound, but you probably have a bunch of sound coming from the fan port, nessisary for ventilation. You can cut a lot of the sound but maintain the airflow by cutting an s-shaped ducting spanning the width of the enclosure. The shape will drop the sound, while then ducting keeps the air flowing. I would not recommend any sorts of filters to block the sound because they are a bit too restrictive for an enclosure in your style.
I get about the same affect by placing a layer of the foam on the wall behind the fans. But you’re totally right. Without that lil bit the fan noise from the intake and exhaust was a lil noticeable
Also high density mass loaded vinyl works better for your enclosure. Foam helps against reflections but they still let sound trough. Mass loaded vinyl basically adds mass to the walls of your enclosure which stops them from transferring the sound waves to the outside.
Very cool, I have a similar set up and I can advice you that it will overheat if you close that cabinet
Not if there were a second fan hiding in there 😉
An…interesting approach to noise-proofing your system :D
For anybody not doing generative AI with it and not running massive loads on it, if you’re going to use an old gaming PC as a home server, at least replace the graphics card with a cheap one with no fans or use the integrated graphics on your CPU (something I believe pretty much all consumer CPUs of the last two decades have) and underclock the CPU if you don’t need full power since even small reductions in clock speed can significantly reduce the maximum temperature.
I thought so too, but turns out not all of the CPUs have onboard graphics and the HDMI port on my motherboard was a lie. Although the graphics card does help with transcoding.
I know for sure Intel server CPUs (for example, Xeons) don’t have integrated graphics and somebody else mentioned that many Ryzen CPUs don’t either.
That said, I’m not sure if they need integrated graphics to have hardware decoding for certain video codecs (though it makes sense that those things come together). Personally when I was looking for a mini-pc to transform into a media server for my living room, I made sure to check in the CPU specs if it had both integrated graphics (as it’s connected to my TV) and hardware decoding for the most recent codecs (I ended up going for a mini-PC with an N100 processor, since it has all that plus it’s power consumption is pretty low with a TDP of 6W).
Can we see it on the outside, closed?
Not op, but went snooping. Looks like it might be on the left.
That’s it! Though when I was first seting up my new place 😊 it’s on my comment history so I don’t think that’s snooping
thanks for sharing, nicely done, would love a video or dB reading. noise wise, my rack doesn’t get too bad running mini-itx boards and quadro p2200s; my gaming rig, on the other hand, could benefit from this. SFF case with a deshrouded rx 6650 xt and 80mm server fans from arctic (max 8000rpm). it sounds like a jet engine spinning up when i play anything, despite the 3000rpm limit i put in fan control.
aside, would you mind sharing your av1 settings? i currently pass everything through ffmpeg to mkv in an attempt to save space with my plex library
thanks for sharing, i was hoping for more specifics to experiment with; i have a powershell script i’m running that does the same thing:
try { ffmpeg -y -hwaccel nvdec -i "$input" ` -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? ` -c:v h264_nvenc -preset slow -rc vbr -cq 21 -b:v 0 ` -pix_fmt yuv420p ` -c:a aac -b:a 160k ` @subtitleArgs ` "$temp" if ($LASTEXITCODE -eq 0 -and (Test-Path $temp)) { $encoded = $true } else { throw "GPU encode failed" } } catch { Write-Warning "GPU failed -> CPU fallback" Add-Content $logFile "GPU failed, CPU fallback: $input" $gpuFallbackCount++ ffmpeg -y -i "$input" ` -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? ` -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 20 ` -pix_fmt yuv420p ` -c:a aac -b:a 160k ` @subtitleArgs ` "$temp" if ($LASTEXITCODE -eq 0 -and (Test-Path $temp)) { $encoded = $true } }
cool gaming rig, too! you also know the SFF pains 🤣😂
Neat, an Intel GPU.
Thanks! For plex and frigate it’s been awesome. Also running tdarr to rencode everything to Av1 at 8mbs or less
Still rocking my fractal R3 nothing beats it for disk space and sound proofing
All that storage these days would require a morgage
Seems cozy

It’s not super useful unless you post links to articles explaining what they are.
If you can click a link, you can copy and paste into a search engine.
Raid z1 with 10 14tb disks? That’s a bold move cotton, let’s see how it plays out.
Yea, I definitely would have gone z2, but this all started with the drives, and slowly expanded into this monster. But so far it’s been running smooth. The drives were added at different times to so they shouldn’t fail at the same time (hopefully 😂)
Hey, I’ve been upgrading the same free as (now trunas) for 15 years. I need 40tb of space to redo the raid lmao. It’s striped and mirrored, so I’m losing 18tb. It is what it is for now, works great for my files and Plex.
Haha fair enough. Fixing it after the fact basically requires a second server of equal or greater storage. I fear a rebuild on my 16tb disks.
Damn, you have enough HDDs to host the whole netflix there.
Theres currently 110 tb of usable space. Got a bunch of 14tb drives when you could shuck them for 150 each
Good lord, 114!
And here I thought I was doing something at 10-20 TB.
You go!
What OS are you running?
Are the spinning disks for Linux ISOs? If so, why raidz1 instead if snapraid?
What’s your electric bill look like each month?

How are the temps?

Yeah, seems a second fan would help with air flow into/out of the case. Depending on how air tight everything is when it’s closed.

There are actuality two fans. There’s an intake on the bottom full cold air, and the top is exhaust. I posted temps if you wanna see how it is at full tilt

Added them in another comment, but I’ll put them here to. This is while I have plex and frigate running with tdarr rencoding 8 files into av1 at a time
