- Comment on New US Congress bill proposal requires all operating system providers to verify ages 2 weeks ago:
not really. it was a natural progression. with any online movement it always goes undergound > cool > profitable > user blocked > forced. we’re at the forced stage of social media. What I mean by this is at one point we found social media and even LLMs cool. companies decided they needed to capitalize on this cool new tech and make a buck out of so they in turn hammered ads and tracking into everything. the user eventually gets wise and blocks all of this while still consuming the product. So said companies now demand that world governments prevent people from out right blocking them so they can continue marketing to them and selling their data for a profit. They then mask this as “protecting the children”. All you have to do is look at whose financially backing these movements. Surprise, Surprise one of the top backers/lobbyists is Meta.
It moved quickly because it needed to move quickly otherwise the potential for lost profit was massive. LLMs are getting on board with this too because they’re not making any money and their best bet is to “age restrict” their bots so they an sell the users data. and user data from an LLM is INSANELY more valuable than say Facebook user data. Users are more likely to tell a bot things that they wouldn’t admit on social media…and there’s money to be made off that.

from an IT perspective NixOS would be VERY easy for them to setup. pretty much clone the same configuration across all computers and you’re good to go. PLUS if they installed comma with it would make the user experience easy. just have to teach people to open a terminal and type “, firefox” and you’re good to go. keeps things clean. don’t have to worry about people installing stuff that could potentially break their system as you would just lock down the nix configuration.
- Comment on Mathieu Comandon Explains His Use of AI in Lutris Development (my interview!) 5 weeks ago:
After reading the interview (great job btw) I can see he’s utilizing Claude Code in the correct way. As someone whose contracting day job is to code review and report on the various fuck ups companies make utilizing AI him stating it’s more used as a sort of rubber duck or peer programming is honestly, like it or not, the correct way to utilize these tools.
Now him stating that he hopes Anthropic won’t feed on what he’s produced…I wouldn’t bet on it bud. your code base has already been utilized.

or “Our advertisers are complaining that their ads are being served more towards bots than actual humans, we need to verify that real people are consuming the ads”

- Comment on Neocities founder stuck in chatbot hell after Bing blocked 1.5 million sites 2 months ago:
yeah I don’t bother with DDG anymore. used to love it but now it’s just hot garbage. Now I just use a 4get instance and for news just use the brutalist report and spike.news
- Comment on Neocities founder stuck in chatbot hell after Bing blocked 1.5 million sites 2 months ago:
pretty much. DDG for example uses a bing-yahoo “alliance thing” (can’t remember what it’s officially called but Microsoft and Yahoo have a sort of partnership in this regard).
Your options for actual first party search options are literally pretty much the ones you listed. Yandex is russian so not trusting those guys anymore than I trust Google or Microsoft so that just leaves Yahoo which is…yeah.
Honestly people are just better off using something like SearX or 4Get. they’re all the same except with those two you’re not going to get the AI slop or ads.
