I haven’t checked on KDE Bigscreen or Waydroid TV in a few months. Have you tested them? I tried both after the big Bigscreen update last year and it wasn’t ready yet. As soon as it’s ready, I’m taking the motherboard out of my framework laptop and replacing my Shield with it.

Wooo! I am ready to purchase the Steam Machine whenever it comes out and install CachyOS on it. Can’t easily install KDE Bigscreen + Waydroid TV on SteamOS. I expect with the AI bubble it will be at least $1k unfortunately, and won’t be available in white at launch.
Then the Nvidia Shield + SSD + Game Native on the main floor where the Steam Machine will go, will replace the Raspberry Pi in the bedroom, the Raspberry Pi will become another MotionEyeOS security camera, and the main desktop will remain connected downstairs. It is the perfect middle ground between the Shield and Desktop PC. And the Steam Controller is the perfect controller for couch gaming.
My siblings and I have about 2000 games between us with family sharing and on other platforms (shout out to freegames@feddit.uk & SteamDB sale tracking for helping us get a lot of the way there), it will be more appealing to play multiplayer games there in the livingroom. And that’s not including all of the legally available retro console games from the Internet Archive via IAGL.

If you’re putting CachyOS on it anyway, then why wait for the steam machine, can’t you just use any old desktop? Or is it just the call of the lovely shiny new hardware?
Shout out appreciated ☺️

I want one because it’s got a proper HDMI-CEC implementation for a living room TV device, it will run silently, and it’s tiny. I also have a Steam Deck, so I expect to use them together quite often.
I am aware I can get a different PC right now. I don’t want one bad enough to do it though. I also may not buy a Steam Machine depending upon how the price shakes out. I was thinking maybe $600ish when they announced it, but it’s not worth $1k to me given its modest capabilities.

The small size is probably the biggest factor since it fits well under the TV, as is the I/O including HDMI-CEC, dedicated radio for controllers, everything just works.
Desktop PC is where I do my customizations, 20 HDD bays & 6 SSD, etc, but I run Debian on there
