I’ve not read the details for a few years, but I’d guess there isn’t because there doesn’t need to be for the vast majority of users. Even the few who use desktop mode can manage with flatpaks, the few who can’t can use distrobox, etc.

Yeah that’s what I meant, if you really want to use pacman or one of the traditional package managers then install another distro

Could be a Steam Deck running Windows just to fuck with you
- Comment on Any desktop-mode tips for a new Steam Deck owner? 2 days ago:
Well that’s not what the OS is designed for, it’s designed to be simple to update and hard to break. If you really want a traditional package manager then you can just install a different OS, I guess.

Apparently distrobox come pre-installed. Also I don’t think there’s any rpm-ostree on steamos, that’s a Fedora Atomic thing.
- Comment on Any desktop-mode tips for a new Steam Deck owner? 3 days ago:
Yeah looks like it’s installed by default. Can’t find an official announcement/changelog but according to an unsourced reddit thread it’s been there since steamos 3.5.

Can’t you just use distrobox directly on steamos to save changing os?

If you’re putting CachyOS on it anyway, then why wait for the steam machine, can’t you just use any old desktop? Or is it just the call of the lovely shiny new hardware?

I would like to freely pan around with one pad and point with the other
I think XCOM 2 does exactly this

The project and launcher itself is completely free and legal to download, but if you wanna play the games, you will have to supply legally dumped copies of each of these games from their PS2 versions
- Comment on Resolution for output to monitor? 2 months ago:
Depends entirely what you’re running, I’ve done some simple games at 4k 60 fps without issue, but some have to go to 1080p on low settings

I’m not going to buy one but I’m always interested to see what they can make

I use Solaar on my desktop to remap gestures for a Logitech mouse, I would imagine it should work on a Deck too

Heroic Launcher does them both too, probably a bit less slick though

Doronko Wanko is a short free game with a funny name about being a dog and making a mess

The Steam Deck can behave like a Switch; if you want to stick to just Steam games with a big ✅ verified icon then it will probably be a similar experience, just with a different library of games (and better sales).
The Steam Deck can also be a full PC; you can plug in keyboard, mouse, screens, whatever, and use it to replace your laptop/desktop if you really want.
The middle ground is that the Steam Deck can be an incredibly versatile gaming machine. I can play the verified Steam games, I can usually play the non-verified games, I can install Heroic/Lutris and install all my free Epic/GOG/Amazon games with minimal tinkering, I can install emulators and run all my old Nintendo games at better resolutions and frame rates, and if I really feel like tinkering then I can install whatever else I want and try to get it working, but I always have all the reliable games to fall back on if I can’t!

Since I started !freegames@feddit.uk I’ve not spent a penny in the Steam sales, unfortunately my backlog is now about five times as long.

My thoughts exactly, it’s much easier and cheaper to make your first game for PC

Same, the dual-boot is there just in case but it gets less and less use as time goes by

There was a comment thread in one of the Linux communities the other day talking about this mindset. Obviously the comments got a bit rude and unconstructive, but the point is that you can switch to something like bazzite now and most things will work pretty well, but if you’re holding out until it’s perfect then you’ll be waiting forever!

I’m always a fan of companies making something new rather than the same old same old (identical black rectangles being the classic example). Yeah a lot of them are terrible but I think they get points for trying!

I think this is the one I have, but any web search for “gaming pillow” should find plenty of options
- Comment on What are your favorite accessories for the steam deck? 1 year ago:
I’ve got something I can only describe as a “gamer’s breastfeeding pillow”, it’s a sort of U-shaped pillow which you rest your arms and Deck on. Handy for a long play session if your arms get tired.
