Well you may be right and Valve may only be aiming to support some of the already-existing handhelds out there that are ARM based.
Valve does know how to play the long game on support, so time will tell.

I could see a budget Deck with an ARM processor, but I still doubt the flagship model wouldn’t be x86-64

Did you check the Discover store?
Also, Steam Link is another easy option for remote control.

I agree this is a discussion worth having. You shouldn’t have been downvoted just because you’re proposing we talk about a thing without advocating for it (necessarily). It’s also okay to play devil’s advocate with the discussion, as I think you’re doing here.
The issue I have with a kernel level anti-cheat is that even with those anti-cheat measures, cheating is still happening. Why then allow such invasive software on my machine? It’s a major reason why I don’t like to play multiplayer online with strangers (though my strong introversion actually explains that preference better).
But just because that’s my preference doesn’t mean I think that the option shouldn’t exist. I just don’t want it forced upon me. FOSS should be about choice. If I want those choices taken away, there is always Windows.

I really enjoyed Deliver Us The Moon, but I haven’t bothered with Mars because the general consensus is that it’s not quite as good. I got Mars free from Epic, but I have other games that I’m more excited to play first.
I’m disappointed that the studio didn’t do better from these games because I was genuinely impressed with Deliver Us The Moon, simply because it was different and good.

I noticed and appreciated that weight reduction too. As a gamer who started with the Mattel Electronic IntelliVision, my hands are now less forgiving of stress than they used to be.

- Comment on PS5 controller use with Steamdeck 7 months ago:
Make sure your controller’s firmware is updated. I’ve seen a fair number of complaints about getting a DualSense working outside of a PS5 where the owner never updated the controller.

Let me tell you that as someone who lays on their back while playing, I truly hate charging points on the bottom. If I’m not exactly mobile, I’m plugged into a charger because why waste battery life. Having that port on the bottom makes relaxing comfortably much harder.
- Comment on Noob Question: What's your process for backing up your Steam Deck? 10 months ago:
Doesn’t sound like Clonezilla would be a great option then. The keyboard is necessary for that as it will be how you navigate menus and input your clone image name.
You can use the Steam Link App from a laptop to help manage desktop work, assuming there’s one available to you. It would allow you to have a keyboard to use on it remotely.
What I think you’ll really want to do is to grab a copy of your user’s home folder, which IIRC will also have all your Steam Library games. Once you get your external drive, this should be easy enough.
- Comment on Noob Question: What's your process for backing up your Steam Deck? 10 months ago:
I would setup the external drive with Clonezilla and take a drive image of the internal Steam Deck drive. That will preserve everything and it will restore everything once you get the Deck back from Valve. I did a Clonezilla image when I upgraded my internal drive, and it worked out great.
- Comment on Help troubleshooting dead steam deack controller 10 months ago:
Try upgrading the UEFI. Do NOT use the reset to default option on firmware 118. It’s bugged and will cause additional problems.
If you’re already on 118, I would first try to reapply it. If nothing changes, then downgrade to 116 and check. If functional again, upgrade back to 118.
Note: I sold my original Deck, so I can’t be sure 118 is the current UEFI version.
I had previously used the restore defaults option on 118 while troubleshooting an unrelated problem, and that caused the sound and touchscreen to stop working. Downgrading to 116 and back to 118 fixed it.

- Comment on Star Citizen Just Had its Biggest Crowdfunding Day Ever With $3.5 Million in 24 Hours 11 months ago:
It’s relevant because it’s the most expensive game ever, yet it only targets one platform. The second most (and others) can at least justify some of their expense because they’re targeting multiple platforms which does have a cost.

- Comment on Firmware update bricked dock 11 months ago:
Aaarg. That sucks. I never dealt with mine because the LE OLED model I ordered arrived. I haven’t had problems with it yet. I also upgraded to 3.5.7 BUT I’ve only played it handheld without headphones so far. Trying to get headphones to work on my OG model was what triggered the problem for me in the first place.
I’m glad you knew how to work around it. I was just using desktop mode. I’m sure they’ll fix it.
- Comment on Did you receive your Deck OLED? 11 months ago:
Same here. I was surprised how fast it got here when the original estimates were much longer.
- Comment on Firmware update bricked dock 11 months ago:
It doesn’t matter because others are having the same problems from a different upgrade path.
You got lucky. Call it a win.
- Comment on Firmware update bricked dock 11 months ago:
I appreciate that. I will give that a shot tonight. I was too frustrated with it yesterday to start digging for a workaround after I spent the earlier part of the day upgrading my NAS to OpenMediaVault 6 (from OMV5). I spend most of my week working on computer stuff, and I just want my “consolized” PC to work - especially when the OS is supposed to be stable.
- Comment on Firmware update bricked dock 11 months ago:
It’s because there’s an A/B partition setup to the OS, and you’re just selecting the other one that you didn’t just upgrade.
- Comment on Firmware update bricked dock 11 months ago:
I’ve seen other reports of dock issues on 3.5.5. I myself have audio issues that I can’t resolve outside of using the desktop mode and manually selecting the audio output I need (I have to stay in desktop mode for it to keep working).
Sigh. I had previously taken my Deck on the road a few weeks back for the first time, and I ran into unrecoverable issues then that kept me from using it until I could get back to a computer and USB drive. Right after I reinstalled the OS, I ran into yet another bug in the UEFI firmware - do NOT choose to restore defaults on firmware 118 or you’ll lose audio and touch. The only way to recover from that was to downgrade the firmware and then upgrade again.
I genuinely love the Steam Deck, but the number of hard-to-resolve bugs lately has been HIGH.
If you still can roll back to the previous OS version, that should fix it for now. Hold down the [***] button during boot up and select the previous version.
- Comment on [deleted] 11 months ago:
Indeed not, but that is a good thing. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to order one two hours after it went live. They did initially show as sold out (actually went back and forth several times), so it is conceivable that Valve identified and cancelled a bunch of bot-generated orders so that actual people are able to get one.
The downside is that I spent more money than I really wanted to spend, but whatever.
- Comment on soon... 11 months ago:
Agreed, I am also amazed. I managed to get a LE model after almost two hours. They refunded the 512GB model quickly too.
