Comment on Codeberg Is Down

Legit in the middle of setting up a personal cache server for docker containers when this happened. I must have checked my settings 15 times before I realized it wasn’t me. Grrr.

I was in the middle of patching a DWL build and I royally messed up one of the patches and it completely broke everything. had to pull down a fresh version of the patch and also pull in my nixos config…codeberg was down.
It was at that point I realized “yeeeeeah keeping my nixos system on codeberg and only on codeberg probably isn’t a good idea anymore.”
I do a once a week backup via borg but I’m starting to think I need an alternative for daily stuff.

Their down site blames a freak power outage for it, but still.
I was on the fence about building this cache stack, but now I think I need it.
This all started in my head back when Microslop acquired GitHub. Only a matter of time before they totally screw that up.
I use a lan hosted private forgejo instance for my own stuff. I know that isn’t what it’s meant for really, but it’s very convenient.
Anything I want public I’ll either clone to a service, like codeberg, or I’ll mirror to my VPS on a site forgejo public instance I think. Whenever I can get around to it.

yeah last year I had a private forgejo on a bare metal server but I ditched that cause I was paying for something I wasn’t really using much. I might just bite the bullet and go back to that and also slap a VPN on it since with the recent mullvad bullshit I really don’t want to continue giving them money.

What happened with Mullvad?

It’s a hard balance to strike. Cost vs. Ethics and reliability.
