I have these stupid clickbait titles aimed at making the company out to be the bad guy, when the truth is that the government “requested” (read: ordered) them to hand over the data.
Read it this way: Apple had data to share so when government asked for it they complied.

You can have notifications that doesn’t use proprietary servers. At least on Google side. unifiedpush.org
Google probably knows my cat’s last name and date of birth. And its probably sending data to “them” about my cat.

I really wish articles like this made it more clear that this was under government orders.
