Look there’s always been plenty of sad story elements to the Fallout games, but sometimes they lean way too hard in the direction of “every outcome is depressing and there is no good option”.
Reported lead of Obsidian's new Fallout game wants you to feel a "sense of agony" when playing an RPG, rather than being an all-powerful god-splatterer

I think that misses the point of the series though, or at least 3 and 4. The point is that you become the god that saved or destroyed the wasteland. You become the legend for the next generation.

3 and 4 are genuinely the low point of the series and misinterpreted a lot from the original games. New Vegas was a lot closer to the original games. Yes, you can do heroic or terrible things, but I saw the franchise as very much an exploration of human nature during a time where people needed to scrounge and rebuild to survive. In the old games, resources are scarce and you have to make ethically gray choices. There’s not enough to go around, genuinely.

That’s 2/3 of what has been released this millennium. At this point it’s what the series is.

To that point kingdom come deliverence does that really well, first you have the “from nothing” starts but also because of birth you just can’t be everything. You are, unfairly, limited in what you can really do, even if you can become godlike in what you are allowed to be.
Fallout one does a good job with this because of the timer, and travel. You are always just one person doing what they can.
The worst case is definitely where a game is made to be a god splatter but for some reason it’s not just hard but punishing narratively like youre making a mistake. That’s no fun to me.
