in the latest Beta
Forgot that snapshots are technically betas and thought they were updating an ancient Beta version

I have this problem… I ended up getting one anyway and do kind of regret it. It’s a great machine and I’ve enjoyed having it for the occasional flight or train ride, but when I’m at home I’d rather just be hooked up to my desktop or TV. If I was still commuting an hour to the office everyday I’d probably get a lot more use out of it

- Comment on Valve may be working on a new kind of Steam Machine 1 month ago:
Much better environment for it now than the first time around. They’ve had a lot of time to refine SteamOS and have much more hardware experience with the Steam Deck.

That sounds good to me, especially if they go back to Dark Souls style world design. I love Elden Ring but the size of the world made it feel sort of empty at times

Ah damn, was worth a try I guess. Does seem like it’s a hardware issue then and needs a repair

Have you tried a BIOS update? I had an issue with my screen and thought I needed repair but it turns out some hardware issues are linked to the BIOS. These are the instructions steam support gave me, just on the off chance they help you:
To update to that BIOS you will need to opt into the ‘Main’ OS update channel:\
- Turn on Developer settings (steam button > settings > system > ‘Enable Developer Mode’)
- Turn on ‘Show Advanced update Channels’ in developer settings (steam button > settings > developer settings)
- Set Deck to ‘Main’ in OS Update Channel (steam button > settings > system)
- Select Apply under ‘Software Updates’ above and then select the ‘Restart’ once it is done.
- Once the Deck restarts and has loaded to the OS, unplug the external monitor to test if the Deck’s internal screen is now displaying correctly.

I read it this way as well. Even if I didn’t trust Larian as a company (I do), it’s pretty clear that taking the time to make a high quality product worked out really well for them.

I remember back like ten years ago, you had to run Steam inside wine if you wanted to even begin the process of getting a game to run on Linux.
It’s incredible how far we’ve come since then. Most of the time I don’t even bother checking compatibility before installing something. Most of the time it just works as if I was running Windows.

Has Valve actually given up engine development? Source 2 only just released recently, although not much is using it, to be fair
