The more I learn about Valve culture the more I realize they definitely have teams just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. I bet there are some really wild prototypes that we never get to see.

Running games at 800p targeting 40fps is a lot more viable than I would have expected just looking at the numbers. It looks great for a display that size and 40fps feels like it’s a lot closer to 60fps than it really is.
I get why people using it as their primary gaming device would want more power but as a secondary device for me it’s stellar.
- Comment on Steam deck for a TV party game emulation machine? 5 months ago:
I do this with Xbox controllers and it’s very easy. Depending on the emulator you usually have to assign which physical controller should be used for which console input. Usually this is a one time setup unless you switch back and forth a lot between the built in a Steam Deck controller and an external one.
I recommend launching the emulator from Steam when setting that up so there isn’t any confusion between connecting directly to the controllers vs using Steam Input. Once the setup is done you can launch individual ROMs directly from Steam.
You can even mix and match controllers. I’ve played Smash Bros with a mix of Xbox, GCN and PS4 controllers on the Deck.

Windows 8 was an attempt to do all that already, though I don’t know that it succeeded. My guess is that this sort of handheld will run a stripped down version of Windows running the Xbox app.

Windows is already the handheld version of Windows but it’s kind of terrible at it.

Bazzite is basically this with open hardware. A first party Valve version doesn’t make as much sense compared to a handheld like the Steam Deck.

It’s still a little clunky with a controller but the touch screen really helps to fill in the gaps. I also map the paddle buttons to zoom in and out since that’s really important.
It wouldn’t take much to make it much more controller friendly. Maybe another ten years of development time. 😀

I’m exaggerating for comedic effect. I have ~300 hours in PZ all on the Steam Deck. Not the game I was expecting to play on it but it works pretty well.

This is only because they exclude me as an outlier putting in ten thousand hours of Project Zomboid on the Deck.

This is great to hear. I’ve been considering a setup like this. I’ll have to try this out.
Eventually I’d like to build a new desktop exclusively for gaming to keep near my media center and then just use a docked laptop for productivity work. Currently I just have a long HDMI cable run to the TV which mostly works until I want to do something on my computer while in the middle of a game.

Pretty sure at least a million of those pets for Scratch are from me.

A better screen at a higher resolution will change performance targets.

No, but I bought a third party one that stopped working, returned it and bought the official dock which is still working.
