Thanks for the details. I don’t think that covers my main problem though: letting other people who are not tech savvy share their libraries with me.
A user story would be: “I want to enter a search and find the result across all my friends’ shared libraries.”

After the recent plex player debacle I’m once again trying to come up with a way for me and my diaspora to share media using Jellyfin, but without relying on Tailscale. We have several media libraries, and some of the library hosters are not too tech savvy, so coming up with a solution to replace the ease-of-use of plex hasn’t been easy.

This probably isn’t what you’re going for, but my family all use our gaming PC running bazzite for this kind of thing. We use Firefox and have bookmark bar links to plex, immich, etc., and we all just use the same system account, and some of us have our individual steam accounts. Use it with a blueooth mouse and keyboard, and game controllers. It’s not tiny, and using the keyboard and mouse is bigger than just a remote, but we get to type on a real keyboard, we get to point with a real mouse, and we don’t have to fight with all the app limitations that would come along with a more limited device. Been doing this for like a year or two and nobody has complaints. We sometimes still use our xbox in another room, but it’s pretty rare. Using a real PC for this kind of thing is just a better experience.
- Comment on How much pain should I expect upgrading my server from Debian 12 to 13? 3 days ago:
Annecdata here, but I didn’t have any significant problems on like 5 servers. I recall there being one minor edge case, but I don’t remember what it was (sorry). But other than that it was really easy. Even my nvidia drivers continued to work (for cuda, not GUI), which was really surprising. ZFS, docker, ssh, nfs, etc. all continued to work without any problems.
If you want to do a test run, create a 12 VM and install your same package list, then upgrade it and see what happens. That could take as little as an hour to do, but more likely a few hours if you want to really take time to inspect everything after the upgrade.

namecheap is the registrar I use, and ddclient works with them. Been using it for like 10 years.
Another thing I do is log the public IP address of my laptop and my home into syncthing every 5 minutes.

It would be cool if the E-ink display printed some system information and the time when the machine powered off. Then you would have a reference about the state of the machine without having to turn it back on.
- Comment on Gamers Are Building Steam Machines From Repurposed PS5 APUs 2 months ago:
Has anybody done this with a PS4 and have results to share? I know it’s possible, but I’m curious how feasible the PS4 is for a normal server workload. It seems like that could be a good way to repurpose last-gen gaming hardware that people will eventually be getting rid of in bulk.

Ok, then I’m amazed somebody has such a tiny finger.

That doesn’t look even close to as thin as a human hair.
- Comment on The Enshittification of Plex Is Kicking Off, Starting with Free Roku Users 10 months ago:
The current Roku app is so awful that nobody’s going to want to pay for Plex after using it. When I first saw it, I actually thought Plex was trolling Roku by giving them the shittiest possible experience for Plex.

lol, this reminded me of the MS surface parody. “Instead of using one of today’s more popular compact devices to get directions to where you’re going, why not use a device the size of a small car to do the same job?”
