- Comment on Facebook and Instagram publish graphic porn ads disguised as fake make-up tutorials. 1 day ago:
the 40-minute ads
40 fucking minutes???
In the ads, the first frame, used as the default thumbnail on the platform, was of the make-up instructor. During the period of up to a minute where the ad displayed hardcore porn, the instructor appeared again every 15 frames, intermixed with the porn. Once the hardcore porn ad finished, a slowed-down version of the actual make-up tutorial played for approximately 40 minutes, until the end.
Oh, so that’s how it worked.
They highlight the challenges the social media giant faces as it comes up against unscrupulous advertisers on its platforms.
Pffffft, there’s no “challenge”, facebook gets money either way. The only challenge is for the people who use fb and insta for whatever reason.
- Comment on Google’s ‘Ask for Me’ feature calls businesses on your behalf to inquire about services, pricing. 4 weeks ago:
Oh great, exactly what every small shop is asking for: AI clients that will never show up!
- Comment on Dragonsweeper is a free, neat and nifty RPG take on a venerable PC puzzler 4 weeks ago:
Well, this is a nifty game, I like it!
- Comment on Dino Crisis-esque horror Code Violet won't be coming to PC because the risk of "vulgar" mods isn't worth the "extra money" 5 weeks ago:
Ok, my first reaction was “fucking bullshit”, because no way that’s a real reason.
Then I followed to this linked kotaku piece about Judgement game series, which talks about how Johnny’s, one of the biggest model/talent agencies in Japan, is worse than Nintendo in its “image protection”.
So, while “we do not want anyone modding vulgar versions of the main character as well as other characters in the game” is still fucking bullshit, it might not actually come straight from the developer. If the game does relatively well, expect people to r34 the hell out of the characters anyway.

I wish they’d make proc-genned interiors for certain planetary buildings, or at least create slightly different architectures. Every abandoned research station, every small outpost, every trade outpost, everything everywhere in the galaxy is exactly the same. Even the ruins you can excavate once in a while are always the same sandrock, tilted walkways with some chests

No dates anywhere yet. It looks cool as hell, tho.
- Comment on The Black Friday sale for the most popular gaming system on the planet doesn't actually have any games on sale...? 2 months ago:
Well, you’re talking about google, of course no humans are involved anywhere.
- Comment on Minetest breaks the chains of being a Minecraft clone with a new name — Luanti 4 months ago:
Funnily enough, as Minetest/Luanti is written in Lua, it should be easy-ish, in theory, to import some of the simpler roblox games.
Then again, good luck bringing people from Java Minecraft or Roblox over to a FOSS alternative. “Nobody’s there”.
- Comment on The Internet Archive’s Fight to Save Itself 4 months ago:
Honest question, can we, common folk, make a motion or something for the Internet Archive to become some sort of Cultural World Heritage, protected by the UN?
Actually, would that even be helpful in the first place? I have this naive notion that doing so would give it more protection and funding, so anyone that knows better please correct me
- Comment on I did it. I finally did it. After all these years, all the time I spent searching, I found the last known fully offline build for Graal classic. 10 months ago:
The part of player created content sounds more like Second Life or VR Chat, but 2D. Or a 2D Roblox, minus the evil corpo behind it.
- Comment on TikTok is getting closer to launching an Instagram rival 10 months ago:
I thought you could already “share” texts in tiktok? You can DM and comment on videos. Besides, tiktok and instagram are already each other’s rivals, vying to keep people trapped there with infinite short videos.
- Comment on Smart devices are turning out to be a poor investment 10 months ago:
Oh no, if only those people that kept shouting at every opportunity how terrible these “smart” devices were had
been listened toshouted louder, maybe people would be aware. But alas, everyonenobody could’ve seen that coming, it’s truly a surprise.we are left with the remains of a dream unfulfilled and electronics that respond to the whims, fancies, and ever-changing business decisions of corporations

- Comment on Playtron plans to launch PlaytronOS, a Linux-based OS for gaming 11 months ago:
Of note, Playtron’s CEO is Kirt McMaster, the asshole who destroyed CyanogenMod for profit. Ars Technica’s comment section isn’t holding any punches on how unlikely this is to even become a finished product, much less something actually competitive against Steam Deck
