Back when the news dropped that they were potentially dropping the replacement parts for LCD, the news was focused on the battery. However mine needs a new LB, so I had been looking at that. Those also increased in price around the same time, nearly 150%.

Small nitpick, but any company that produces a product is also going to sell that product, they just may not be selling it directly to consumers. Companies that are selling to other companies still have someone in charge of doing that. Otherwise they wouldn’t make any money on the things they produce.

Look, I want it bad. It was actually the one I was most excited about, a little bit more than the controller.
But, yeah. Look at every tech release of the past four years. Look at SSD and RAM prices. Hell even spinning platter drives. Everything has a wait list, or gobbled up by scalpers. And if you do win the wait list lottery, it’s going to cost a goddamn arm and leg. It’s depressing man.

SteamOS in seems to have references to the deck all over the place, if I recall correctly from the GN video I watched. It was one of their criticisms. Overall I’m not sure it was really fully baked before shipping.

They have absolutely had sales on their hardware. I am pretty sure they’ve put deck on sale every year since it came out.
As for building my own, yeah I know, and I’ve considered it many times. But I absolutely dread working in small form factor, and this thing’s size was one of the main appeals for me.

Your comment just now once again reaffirms that you were trying to make the case that the machine’s lack of screen, battery, and optional controller will indeed offset the expected price increases of the memory.
Everyone here is just trying to tell you that they disagree with your expectation/prediction.
But that’s all any of us is doing, after all, is predicting.
We think that the memory increases will be more impactful than not having a screen, battery (super negligible because it needs a power supply anyway), and optional controller, leading to a steam machine that will be over €1,000.
If you do also believe that, absolutely none of your comments make any sense.

It was wrong from Valve to not do the pre-order dance and special ordering process they already did before.
Make up your mind. You said you agreed with the commenter above, said Valve was in the wrong, and then when I suggest it’s okay to be mad at multiple parties, you switched your tune about Valve being in the wrong.
To counter your analogy, it would be a like a shop owner had been robbed before and knows the method by which they have been robbed. They also have, in the past, successfully combated the robbers. Then, the shop owner announced a highly sought after new product and… took no precautions against the robbers. In fact, this is less of an analogy and just… what Valve did.
You can be mad at the robbers and also be pretty annoyed with the shopkeeper for not doing the thing they had done in the past to successfully counteract robbers.

I think it’s important to note that this is not, in fact, a crack. The hypervisor bypass method is not a crack and does not work on all systems (e.g., Linux). This is particularly work mentioning imho on a thread about a game being played on Steam Deck.

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not (Poe’s Law, and all) so just to be safe I’ll remark that releasing a product at an affordable cost is the opposite of anti competitive.
