My pleasure! Happy to see another Raider, on Steam Deck, in the Threadiverse!
That last paragraph is really surprising. I may try that out, though, thanks!
I'm getting used to the 30 FPS and it's not as bad when you learn to play around it. Big thanks for your comment again - it made me go back to tinkering and discover and nice middle ground for things I care about.
Care to raid together sometime?

Steam Deck here:
- No Man's Sky. The new update is great, and the expedition is just moving. Hard to believe it's been 10 years since the game release. So much has happened since, and now I can enjoy the universe, in the palms of my hands. I've tried playing at the lower settings at 30 FPS for better battery life and less noise, and it's actually pretty decent and more relaxing that way.
- ARC Raiders. Again, 30 FPS. 40 FPS is definitely doable here, but I think the visual fidelity can degrade so far this way that it can be too difficult to roam the more open areas and properly respond to threats: you may simply not see them because of the lower resolution you'll have to run it at to keep that 40 FPS stable. And the new update is amazing, too.
- THE FINALS. I will probably wait until 2026-10-20 with this one, when Season 12 arrives. Used to play it with gyro, but the AI that Embark Studios has been using to look for cheating behavior signals has been issuing bans to such players. so I'd rather cut down on competitiveness and not risk an account suspension for months (if that).
- Allumeria. Great mix of Terraria and Minecraft, one I'd been waiting for for years. Can't stop building!
- Ballionaire. Like Balatro, but with pachinko machines and different boards that add their quirks. Really fun in its style, too!
- Pumpkin Jack. It is Spooktober after all! Started it last year, planning to beat it now if I don't get carried away by No Man's Sky and "ARC Raiders* and THE FINALS again (so probably not beating it this year either).
- DERELIKT demo. The game's supposed to be out this year, but I just want to experience them retro System Shock + Doom 3 vibes already, 'tis the season. I really enjoy the visual identity of Hypestrange games.

What's your model? I got an older LCD one. I can kind of get it to run 40 FPS pretty much all the time, but it gets noisy and hot that way, which I really don't like and try to avoid, especially in something like ARC Raiders, because it's a type of game I go in for a couple of hours, maybe "wired" to the socket.
I've tried playing the Frozen Trail update at 30 FPS yesterday with these settings:
- In-game:
- Resolution: Borderless fullscreen at 1280x800, but 50% render scale (so 640x400)
- No AA at all
- All graphics to Low
- SteamOS:
- 30 FPS, 60 Hz
- Allow screen tearing: On - to hopefully get less input, which is especially important on FPS this low
- Half-rate shading: Off
- TDP: 12 (at most)
- Manual GPU clock: 700 MHz - to stop the hiccups when it either spikes or drops down
Surprisingly playable. Although I am mostly used to playing shooters with gyro on the Steam Deck and have difficulty using it as a standard controller in such games. Playing gyro in an Embark game is not an option right now, as they've been increasingly more reliant on AI for behavioural analysis, which has issued many bans to THE FINALS players that were only admitted and reversed somewhat recently, with some of them being issues again weeks after - ARC Raiders has recently introduced the same system, so I'm taking my chances. What I especially like about these settings is that the device runs much quieter and cooler, which gives me a little peace of mind, helping me think I won't have to replace it or at least do some costly maintenance that soon.
The new controller scheme they have is also messing with my muscle memory in the most important of moments. lol
But I really hope that practice can make perfect here as well. I've gotten somewhat okay at this game with a wired 8BitDo Ultimate (the XBOX layout one), but I guess I just hold my Steam Deck differently. Maybe it's time to make better use of the back pedals.
As for the end-game content, yeah, I feel you. Gonna be even more difficult now. I'm not spoiling this to you if you want to read the patch notes yourself.

- Comment on AMD APUs, like the one that Steam Deck has, might get FSR 4 support next year thanks to the tech expanding beyond discreet top-of-the-line GPUs 5 days ago:
These are all solid assumptions and I thank you for providing the data to try and manage expectations here.
However, I do think you're making the case for the current state of things as opposed to what AMD is apparently trying to achieve by supporting older hardware with FSR 4.
That said, it's probably going to be somewhere in the middle, with RDNA 4 (which Steam Deck APU is not) getting the full potential that FSR 4 can provide, and RDNA 2 (which Steam Deck APU is) seeing at least some of it. I wonder if the latter is going to be of any benefit compared to what Steam Deck users have now, especially in terms of the power draw, like you mentioned.

Oh right!
I actually use it all the time in Starminer: have it bound on left trackpad touch, and the trackpad itself be a whole screen mouse region. I guess a game like Dishonored 2 just doesn't lend itself to the lense every now and then, so I didn't even think about it.
I also have the left trackpad dedicated to movement in Dishonored 2, but now that I think of it, maybe layers or chords will do the trick.
Thanks for the reminder! Maybe I'll actually do my second playthrough on the Steam Deck!

I couldn't get far in Dishonored 2 on my Steam deck: text was too small and jagged, both in menus and in-game trivia, like books, letters, etc. Otherwise a great title, yeah, with much smoother combat than the first game - not that the first game's combat is bad, though!

On the Steam Deck? I had actually expected much worse from an UE5 title.
That said, we ain't bringing down no Rocketeers or Vaporizers on them Decks.

Just move somewhere they don't sell and it won't annoy you!

I'm happy it's here and probably will get one down the line. Equally as mad that it's surely gone up in price thanks to all the AI and other bullshit, not only not costing less than Valve Index (as had been originally rumored, I think), but more.
Super sour about the not included PSU. Hate it about the smartphone market, too.
But as a VR enjoyer, I'm still happy.

Oh what a game!
Have you played the DLC they released after the acquisition (after Survivors of the Void, I think)? Any opinions? I personally haven't, but remember enjoying the first DLC thoroughly.
Also, what's your device and controller scheme? I haven't played in years, but played Monsoon on mkb when I did, and I can't imagine tackling this beast on a controller, even with a gyro.

Yeah, good point, hadn't thought of that.

I think capacitor sensors might make better dead-man switches here, especially with chords (requiring both being active at the same time), as holding the grip buttons feels kinda tiring quickly and awkward to my hands.
But it's still so cool.

Given how trigger-happy THE FINALS is with the ban hammer towards gyro players, I really doubt I'd be taking my chances with flickstick in that game.
But I've been thinking about for a while for singleplayer games, yeah. Thinking about the new DOOM trilogy for this.

Steam Deck.
The Talos Principle. It's actually my first time playing the game despite having learned about it near launch and having seen some footage and just wondering at this mysterious puzzle-solving adventure set in such beautiful locations... And it's every bit wonderful, much more than I had expected. And there's so much reading, too! I actually love that part and how it's executed, because it allows me to choose whether to go lore-learning, puzzle-solving or secrets-hunting. The latter is especially amazing here: I love spending days on trying to get to something only to learn that the solution lies in a different direction and turns out to be much simpler. I wonder if that's intended or it's just me.
Half-Life. A while ago I tried playing THE FINALS with gyro only and quickly found out that I gravitate towards the dual-trackpad control scheme, allowing me to achieve more and do less. However, a fast-paced online shooter that is also as demanding wasn't the perfect choice for every time I grabbed the deck, so I tried finally beating Half-Life on Hard - and got humbled. I had thought I was kinda good with gyro, but apparently not. All the better, as it led to me mixing mouse input on the right trackpad combined with gyro as opposed to committing to gyro entirely, the latter doesn't being that much comfortable or precise on a Steam Deck, essentially rotating your controller with your screen.
I will probably pick up THE FINALS on the Steam Deck again, too, with S11 introducing bot matches. Could be a great and fun way to practice or warm up before joining someone's team and contributing a fraction of a fraction of what I can with mouse and keyboard at least semi-predictably.
- Comment on Epic Games Store will get a Linux version sometime "soon" 1 month ago:
And him saying switching to Linux is like moving to another country instead of addressing the issues at home lol
That's after years of talking smack against Valve and Newell, too. Which will not cease, I'm sure, but I bet he's either real angry now or doing a lot of mental gymnastics to tell his narcissistic ass he's not being proven wrong.

Same. This file has been going for years, on and off. No other game does this to me.
Same time, same game 10 years from now?

What's your model, settings and experience for Cyberpunk 2077?
I'm thinking about a handheld playthrough at 40 FPS and Hz and wonder what battery life, fan noise and temps to expect from this thing.
Also, are you playing with or without the Phantom Liberty DLC?
- Comment on Steam deck FPS game weapon switching 1 month ago:
Depending on a game, either of the two:
- Right joystick with continuous activation or release (latter being less reliable)
- Right trackpad menu in an action layer, sometimes through a chord
For example, I can have the right trackpad behave as mouse most of the time, but switch to a virtual menu on click, each item also being activated on click. Some of these items can be bound to weapons, but if that's not an option, like there's being more weapons than I can comfortably fit onto my virtual menu alongside all the other stuff I may want to see there, I could hold L5 to turn the trackpad into a different virtual menu, all dedicated to weapons. I often use gyro on right trackpad touch, so I'm okay with giving mouse input on it for a few moments when I'm switching a weapon.
- Comment on Devolver Digital plan to go private again 2 months ago:
The many that don't realize either actually do realize and play the game because they don't see or believe in another way, or they're also ghouls. Temporarily embarrassed millionaires and all that.
If Devolver Digital actually goes back to being private and uses the money they claim it will save well, that'll be a good story of choosing lasting value and client relationship over short-term monetary gains, which is rare and and hopeful, but especially awesome with these guys, because I love the games they publish.
But you're so right - I, too, wish the rest of the world would do the same. Maybe that'd lead to a more stable world that wouldn't seem impossible to thrive in without excessive hoarding and hostility to anyone else.
