Just swap the buttons to match Nintendo layout, and then there’s a toggle in the steam settings>controller to switch to Nintendo layout

pretty sure the buttons are “keyed” in a way that doesn’t let you put them in the wrong slot. It’s been that way for controllers I took apart.

Genuinely love that feature on my PS3 controller just so I can’t put the wrong buttons in whenever I’m doing in maintenance

People on Etsy sell custom buttons, including Nintendo ones.
They’ve also recently added an option for layout-agnostic glyphs that show the position of the button (the four hollow circles with the button in question filled in) which I kind of prefer

Or get blank buttons and re-map to the Nintendo config.
