“Ew how can people be so poor”
Comment on Why does Helldivers 2 have such a bloated install size on PC? Old hard drives, says dev

Who is running Helldivers on a HDD?

That’s not even remotely what I said and I don’t appreciate the insinuation.
SSDs have been very inexpensive for many years now. Enough that the power bill alone can offset the additional cost.

So uh… you find a lot of people around you tend to ask that, huh?

SSD’s are at best like… 3 times the cost of an HDD (and in that case you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel finding the worst SSD’s known to man)… At worst they are like 5-6 times more expensive. Speaking in absolutes is irrelevant, the relative costs are the ones that matter. Different regions have even higher prices, too.

A 1TB HDD goes for $40-80, depending on how fancy you wanna get. That’s like maybe $20 more. Not that any of that is relevant since you can’t sell back your HDD so $60 is $60. It’s not a lot of money for a massive increase in performance.

People who still have working HDDs I suppose. I only upgraded my drives to SSDs when they started dying, if they were still working fine I wouldn’t have considered replacing them yet.

I’ve got a smallish SSD for operating systems and a 4tb HDD for all my games installed. Think there’s a tb or two of games. Not going to drop hundreds of dollars to upgrade.

A 1TB SSD is \~$60
BootLoop@sh.itjust.works 3 days ago
I would need 2tb and they are definitely not $60 for anything but garbage. I’ve bought the bottom of the barrel SSDs before and I’ve had most of them fail.
artyom@piefed.social 3 days ago
Do you REALLY need 2TB though?
$60 gets a Crucial or Patriot SSD, which are definitely not “bottom of the barrel”

Amazon has a Crucial BX500 2 TB SSD drive for 106 USD
While I fully understand the need for devs to support older hardware, this is also a very low cost upgrade that has a massive impact on user experience. Hell, for 20 something years now there have been articles about how getting an SSD (now nvme) is the biggest noticeable performance improvement someone can do.
As for the topic at hand: I like that they support older systems. But this is also similar to language packs (and high res textures back in the day) where it REALLY should be handled via an opt-in DLC-like system. Because the reason people “need” massive amounts of storage on their gaming systems is BECAUSE of stuff like this. That support for a spinner means the people with SSDs or NVMEs need to spend more disk space on this game which means they need bigger storage which means they start going cheaper and…

think about what you just said very carefully, they have a 4tb drive and it costs $60 per tb for a new SSD. You’re expecting people to just drop at least $240 to replace their working hard drive just because it could be a little bit faster. You can get a 4tb HDD for less than the cost of a 1tb SSD.
And just so I’m not going to respond to a second comment separately, yes some people do need all that space. It can take multiple days to install modern titles over my connection, so uninstalling them to install something else isn’t really an option.

Think about what you just said for a moment. Where did you get $240 from?

gf had a 120gb nvme as c and a 1tb platter as d, no physical space for another drive
