I think that basic KDE looks pretty ugly. I used vanilla gnome for 6 months and loved it. I know about the subreddit unixporn and some riced up KDE DE look really good. I wanted to know that if it’s worth it to rice your Steam Deck DE or should you just pretend that it’s just functional and you shouldn’t touch it. I mean the Steam Deck uses an APU…would it drain a lot of memory to display something more “elaborate”?
Changing the KDE theme shouldn’t significantly impact battery life…
That said, I don’t mind the vanilla Breeze theme, though I do set up a custom color palette in the settings that goes darker than the default dark theme, and enables wallpaper based accents in more places. You can get pretty far with just the colour editor.
Then there are themes, and kvantum, but they need to be maintained lest they break with updates. Most themes do not live long, and while I forked and edited one myself once, it wasn’t worth the effort for me to keep fixing it every update.

You are going to get downvoted by people who think that the term “rice/ricing” has racist origins, before they even read your post.
I am not a Steam Deck user, I came here from sorting by new, but you might get more responses if you use a different term.

Oh I’m sorry I really didn’t know any better. Sorry I didn’t intend to be racist. I will change my post

I’m going to be completely honest - I have no idea what other word can be used in its place to convey what it means in this context.
The intended audience will know that your post didn’t intend to offend IMO

I have never heard it used as a racist word, I don’t think you need to worry
Nima@lemmy.world 10 months ago

English isn’t my first language and I never heard it before. What does it mean?
Localhorst86@feddit.de 10 months ago
“ricing” in this context means heavily modifying the layout, theme and usability of the desktop environment.
It’s a term used in the Linux community and I believe it originally comes from the automotive tuning community, particularly the JDM (Japanese domestic market) subscene.

English is my first language and I’ve never heard of another meaning for rice apart from the food.

It comes from making fun of Asian cars/motor-cycles after ww2.
Then it was to refer to modified Asian cars in the 2000’s, mostly in a negative way. These are the cars that are painted bright colours, have under-glow lighting, decals, full body-kits, and spoilers that are larger than they need to be. Look up the race “Street racing Syndicate” for examples.
It then came to the PC community, where it was used for fully customized rigs or UIs.
People in this group may have never heard it being used in a racist way, especially if they are under 30, and they may not mean any harm by using it.

I’m curious because I’ve never heard it as a racist term, what does rice mean aside from the edible grain used in countless dishes?

Okay. This is bullshit. Who tf would think “rice/ricing” as racist ? It is a Linux term for god sake. People need to stop being so fragile little creatures that they let themselves be offended by something like this.
