There is not much to specify for the question, its really simple: Which title is the first game you have purchased on Steam? Was it a good decision? How much did you pay? When was it and what device? You don’t have to answer all questions, this is just a fun discussion to have.

watch dogs 1 for $5. Couldn’t (didnt want) to play it on mouse and keyboard it was annoying and not made for that at all. Waited a year till i could afford it and got myself an oled steam deck to play it (way before it got expensive). Great decision now addicted to my steam deck.

The Orange Box - well, technically Steam came with it…
Yup. First Steam account created 24th of December (guess why) 2007 for Orange Box.
Back then, it was possible to play Team Fortress 2 on one account on two PCs at the same time, but not on the same server. So my brother and I sat beside each other playing TF2 “together”, but each on a different server.
We did this until we gathered enough money to buy a second copy of Team Fortress 2 in April of 2008. We were finally able to play both in the same match and it was glorious.
We both have and use these accounts to this day.
Skyrim. I was forced to download Steam to play it. I was on dial up and had just explicitly purchased a single player game not dependent on the internet, and yet..
Then it forced me download the game through Steam even though I had the physical disk right there. I couldn’t complete the download, it was too large.

Back then Steam didn’t even support my local currency, but that changed the same year.
In steam (digital purchase) was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2008 but the first game on my account, I think that was The Orange box with Portal and HL2 (physical copy).

I‘m old - Half-Life 2 in the box. I had dial-up. Needless to say I loathed Steam and it’s puke green interface through the 00s. I’m still not exactly fond of it.

L4D2, gmod, and Republic Commando together was my first purchase, it was when I got my first laptop in high school. I’d probably give L4D2 the first game credit.

Wow, so many Half-Life 2 as their first game. … wait a sec, is that a kbin account? I thought kbin died. It was one of the reasons I switched over to a Lemmy instance.
As I recall, you couldn’t get hl2 in stores when it first released. It was the vehicle that got people onto steam. It was a few years before they opened the platform up to other publishers.

Also, Steam was released adjacent to either hl2 or the orange box, don't remember which but that's when i got it. I remember being pissed at the time for it installing a launcher lmao

Assassin’s Creed Revelations - Gold Edition
I didn’t have to look it up to see what game it was, but I didn’t remember the price. I bought Portal for $19.95 almost 19 years ago. Played it on a Windows PC that was not focused on gaming. I guess I’ve also played it on every computer I’ve had since then, including my new-to-me refurb Steam Deck a couple days ago.
Hey congratz on the Steam Deck! I personally can’t play Portal, I always get motion sickness. Not sure when this started happening with me, but this really bugs me. I love that game!

Violence, maybe? I don’t remember if it had blood effects or not. I don’t think it did. But it was released back in the day when Germany was almost as bad as Australia in terms of censorship/banning games so maybe it just never was available there. 🤷♂️
2010 Torchlight, then Puzzle Quest three times, and then Terraria. Torchlight was for scratching the Diablo II itch, but it didn’t really do so for long. $20. Puzzle Quest was pretty addicting, so I gave two others their first hit. $1.50 for each one. Terraria was $10 and I’ve been playing it on and off for 15 years now.
Torchlight was my first steam game too! Got it at the end of 2009 during a Steam sale, 75% off.
Torchlight 2 was way better. I actually have far more time playing that than any Diablo game.
Technically, the physical Elder Scrolls Anthology set, which entitled me to free Steam keys for Morrowind through Skyrim so long as I made an account. I wouldn’t have known about Steam otherwise and was at the time a loyal WildTangent user 💀
The first game I bought myself was LISA: The Painful, then a friend bought me the whole Valve Complete Pack and I was hooked from there.

Someone made me buy Counter-Strike: Source for a LAN party in 2008.
I played Counter Strike in LAN parties too. But I don’t remember which of the games it was, probably the first! I played in early 2000s around. A friend brought me there, it was awesome.

Because my “first” purchace aparently was in 2009, and by that point my steam account was already in active use for 6 years.
The first game that I used steam for was CS 1.6 - about a week after steam launched.
And I think the first new game I paid money for and added to steam was HL2
It should work for pre-2008 because my first purchase shown is a digital copy of the Orange Box in 2007. Did you buy it boxed? It doesn’t show my boxed copies of HL2 or the HL platinum collection I’d bought retail before that point.
It’s possible that all my games before that were physical copies. But I could have sworn I bought stuff before on steam directly
Oh god! Now I need to check my purchase history from maybe 12-13 years ago and hope it isn’t a cringy game! BRB!
