The Guardian (based in the UK, though with editorial operations in the US and Australia) made this decision some 10 years ago, and has stuck with it. So far, they seem to be going well.
- Comment on Instagram is testing “unskippable” ads that you can’t scroll past 4 weeks ago:
They’re about to test the load-bearing capacity of all your normie friends and all the cool celebrities/hot thirst traps being on there. The end goal is a slot machine which shows only ads almost all the time, occasionally delivering a payoff of social or parasocial connection to someone you care about, but only enough to keep the majority of users hooked.

Only if it were bound handsomely in leather with gilt lettering, as befits its divine purpose.
- Comment on Nightdive Studios confirm Linux and macOS ports of System Shock are cancelled 5 weeks ago:
Given that a common subset of the Win32 ABI is now a reasonably efficient virtual machine for running PC games on Linux and (soon) macOS, we can probably expect “do Mac/Linux ports” replaced with “make sure the Windows .exe runs on Mac/Linux”
- Comment on SuiPlay0x1 is a upcoming handheld that is going to run Playtron OS a Linux based (NOTE handheld is being made by blockchain company and with a potential price around $500) 2 months ago:
It’s the cryptocurrency of handhelds: futuristic-looking, impractical to use, and quite possibly a scam.
- Comment on Russia Is Making Its Own Gaming Consoles 2 months ago:
It’ll probably be a shanzhai Steam Deck clone, made largely if not entirely in Shenzhen, with a version of Linux modified to not run unapproved games (and to allow the FSB to monitor any subversive activities). Also, it’ll probably be hacked within two weeks, disabling the surveillance features and making it run a full complement of warez and emulators.

They’re going to have to come up with some sort of protocol for integrating these fake services, so you can post pictures of your virtual pet and have your virtual girlfriend comment on them.

Sounds locked down, and the main people involved have a crypto background. I might give this a miss.
- Comment on Steamdeck setup without PC 4 months ago:
The Steam Deck generally does not use an external PC to set up. It is a PC, and can be put into a (Linux-based) desktop mode, which is generally what you’d use for any configuration beyond what the Steam menus give you.

Calling the Steam Deck a handheld sounds a bit odd.
- Comment on Protective case or not? 5 months ago:
I bought a thin case with a protective front panel that clips on magnetically. That is enough to protect it when thrown in a backpack without adding noticeably to bulk.

The word “tortoise” comes from Tartarus, i.e., Hell, because the ancient Greeks at one point thought that tortoises came from there.
- Comment on Woman who threw bowl of food at Chipotle worker sentenced to work 2 months in fast food job 6 months ago:
How will the logistics of this work? Are there fast-food restaurants that would accept a privileged Karen with anger management issues as a member of their team? After all, they have a business with tight margins to run, and this sounds like a huge liability.
- Comment on Why do some Spanish/English words share the same multiple meanings? 6 months ago:
I’m guessing that in texts in right-to-left languages like Arabic and Hebrew, graphs would be drawn the other way around, the X axis increasing leftward.
- Comment on Why do some Spanish/English words share the same multiple meanings? 6 months ago:
Meanwhile, the French word for left is “gauche”.
Which leads to a famous quip from a Canadian conservative politician some decades ago: “the Canadian left is more gauche than sinister”

- Comment on Valve: don’t expect a faster Steam Deck ‘in the next couple of years’ 9 months ago:
I wonder whether, when the faster Steam Deck 2 comes, it may have ditched the x86 architecture altogether and leapt to a high-performance ARM CPU, yielding more power per watt and generating less heat. If so, that would presumably require Proton to be supplemented with a Rosetta-style translation engine that can convert x86 machine code into ARM.
Currently, outside of Apple’s proprietary M/A-series CPUs, there don’t appear to be high-performance ARM CPUs that would fill such a role, though this probably won’t still be the case in a few years.
- Comment on Slim protective cases for the Steam Deck 10 months ago:
I would like to be able to carry my Deck in a backpack full of other things, including on long journeys, hikes, flights and such, without it taking up too much space (as in the factory case) or the risk of it being scratched/damaged by impact from other objects. It may well be robust enough to withstand being jarred against other objects, though it’s better to be safe than sorry.
