I’m curious about comparing this to say - the white phosphorus scene in Spec Ops: The Line, or the airport scene (“no Russian”) in COD, rescuing Ellie instead of giving humanity the cure in The Last of Us…
All things that are arguably a lot worse than pulling a leg off a stuffed Elephant and all require on-rails player action in a game.

To take the devils advocate position: is conflict not necessary for drama, and effective conflict is one that affects its audience?

I’m an actor, with some combat experience (99.9% swords, a couple of fake gun shots, but they were stage not film).
The idea of this happening is terrifying to me, and makes me want to never do firearms choreo. However, whether sword or firearm, if i injured someone during choreo I would know it’s my fault. I am supposed to always be able to control what I’m doing and if I’m advancing and cutting at their head, even if they forgot to parry or dodge my blade shouldn’t hit their head. If it does - my fault. Its drilled into us.
Having not done firearm choreo on film myself I can’t speak to it, but really there should be no reason to point a live gun (even w/ blanks) at someone, you can set spikes (floor marks) to cheat the angle (make it look like you’re standing opposite but you’re offset) and then you a tape measure to ensure if the gun discharges nothings in the line of fire.
Actors can spend hours with an intimacy coordinator working out a kiss, or with a dialect coach working on an accent, or stunt coordinator working out falling down some stairs, it shouldn’t be different for working with a deadly weapon.
- Comment on Why Paramount Didn’t Market ‘Mean Girls’ as a Musical: ‘People Tend to Treat’ Them ‘Differently’ 10 months ago:
they did the same with Cats. I know I’m fighting a losing battle here to begin with but the appeal of the original Cats is that it’s an incredibly athletic bisexual lycra waking erotic nightmare about a sacrificial death cult and fuck pit. A grueling spectacle of libidinous energy wrapped in the pleas of the condemned as they cavort their own funeral pavane inside an orgone generator made of human garbage.
Putting people that can’t do 10 mid-air splits into a somersault while belting out high notes for 2 hours straight is wrong.

I agree. I dont know why they didn’t make the violin/lighthouse guy the Big Bad of the whole season — he was great.
But he only existed (dramaturgically speaking) to give Stede a reason to reflect on his feelings — and I think therein lies the problem. The second season took the anachronistic charm of the first and went too far into trying to diagnose, therapize and solve the issues of the characters, leaving nothing for the drama afterwards.
My complaint with Oppenheimer was that the character was only harmatia, my issue with OFMD s2 was that they had none.

it didn’t help if you were in (eg) the uk where games cost £1 a go, rather than 25c. Which was nearly $2 in 1992, so 8x as expensive

I replaced my PS4 with it. I game on the couch handheld style when I don’t want to annoy my wife. I game on the TV with MnK blue tooth or my old ps4 controller when i do.
