I don’t think that’s true, at least for companies.
Industry standard or even company standard means you need a very critical reason to switch because doing so is very costly in ways that don’t really affect an individual or a small team.

That doesn’t really work with manufacturers trying to win customers on battery life, as well as hoping that customers will buy a new device rather sooner than later.

Yes, but this allows user to define lower limit, which further prolongs the battery life.
