  I mean, this honestly seems rather nice of Valve? The performance difference likely isn’t that much, and if you are the kind of person where it does matter you’ll probably want to upgrade to 32GB anyway. In which case you can just buy a single 16GB stick rather than having to buy a full kit.

    Surprisingly, in the video they see noticeable improvements in performance with 2 sticks due to it unlocking dual-channel memory. Ut was an up to 15% improvement in CPU bound games.

      An important thing to consider with ddr5 that their method of testing didn’t consider is that a number of 8gb sticks are made in a way that gives a lot lower performance. So the 8gb sticks valve could source may not have had that big of a difference from a single 16gb stick.

    I think generally you aren’t supposed to use different kinds of memory together, so a lot of people would replace it entirely.

      I think this may have been an issue eons ago, now everything just agrees on what speed to run based on the slowest stick. Haven’t heard of it being a problem for a while.

  That’s what I was thinking… secondary market for replaced Steam Machine memory… but TBH, after I got downgraded from the 2TB reservation to the 512, and saw the removal of the 4K60 stat, and the problems with single channel memory, and the cancelation of the Companion Cube, I don’t even want one anymore. 😔

      I already cancelled it yesterday, I’m sure someone else took the slot. 😂

      But realistically, it IS a bad deal financially, the only reason I kept mine at all was the aesthetic. But then I lost the wood faceplate and then the Companion Cube. 😔

  Cost to performance ratio of “upgrading” to dual-channel doesn’t really make sense.

  Seems like the actual difference in gaming performance is negligible in all but a few edge cases.

  Kind of lost excitement after the price tag. If Xbox and Sony raised their prices first I feel like maybe the public would of received the steam machines price better. Its still too much for me regardless, I don’t need one just wanted one as a fan boy.

  Also its the steam frame that is the more important one in my mind.

  Look up gamehub (don’t use it though it’s made by game sir I think) they are already using fex and you can play games like red dead 2 at 60fps 720p on a pocco phone.

  Like a year or two down the line the verification system will be super matured and you will just be able to play the games on your phone. Fex could potentially even help inspire someone to make a arch based operating system for phones so we have something other than Ubuntu touch and postmarket os. And it would be able to run pretty much any application. A lot of native Linux apps are already ported to arm like blender, being able to run exes and video games helps a lot.

    Look up gamehub (don’t use it though it’s made by game sir I think)

    There is GameHub Lite, which is a community fork of GameHub with all telemetry removed.

    There is also GameNative, which has been working a lot better than GameHub on my Xiaomi Pad 6. It’s an older tablet, so maybe GameHub works better on newer hardware.

    And there is Winlator too. Haven’t tried this one yet, so can’t comment on its features or compatibility.

    So much of the world is going to arm and x86 is on its way out.

    Thank God. The world will be a better place without Intel, AMD, and their x86 disaster.

  If I were to get one, and I’m not rich to throw away money at this, I’d be wary of upgrading them myself. The teardowns showed there are some particularly fragile ribbons cables glued that would be really easy to damage.

  Ive heard that a single stick of ddr5 can run some kind of dual channel. So it doesnt effect speed much.

    DDR5 runs two 32 bit channels per stick instead of one 64 bit channel like ddr4 but overall it is still 64 bit total per stick and needs two for 128 bit.
