  What is the difference between cracking this security chip and all the softmods that allowed unsigned code (invluding pirated games) to be executed?

    You can make software and more that work without exploits because you simulate the original DRM

    In this particular case it should enable ODEs (optical drive emulators) so you can replace your failing drive with an SD card reader. Right now the most common forms of PS2 jailbreaks have to load software from external sources like HDD (via network adapter, not compatible with later models), USB memory (via USB 1.1 ports) or memory card to SD adapter (MX4ISO). The last two have compatibility issues due to insufficient speed and competing for resources with software being ran.
