Oh sweet! When I first tried it, PopOS tried using it as a WiFi adapter (which I suppose it is) and it kept failing to connect. Hopefully this resolves it.

I’ve heard it in a few places, one that comes to mind being an interview with some engineers that PC Gamer did. The RAM was originally half (on par with the Quest 3) but once they realized how much the potential library would expand, they bumped the RAM to 16GB.
This decision was made pre RAM crisis, of course.

They mention that the compute required to support streaming was also already enough to run standalone games. Removing the ability to run games on the headset wouldn’t have changed the design much anyway.

This was deadass the thing that made me switch my daily driver to Linux. Moving the sidebar was so useful on multi-monitor setups.

I just moved from Google, so thus far it has felt like a significant improvement for me.

I’m actually hyped for this. A privacy-first alternative to google cloud. I still prefer to self-host all my stuff, but this is WAY more accessable to my less tech-savvy friends

I began noticing this on my discover weekly, some particularily bad AI slop was showing up (I listen to a lot of ambient) and that alerted me to audit the rest of my playlists.
Look for artists that:

release an absurd amount of music per time period

have only released music post-2023

use obviously AI generated album art

have no photo of the real artist or description
Found about a dozen offenders.

Quit discord last year. Moved my core friend group onto Signal.
Potential alternatives and their issues:
- Guilded: owned by Roblox, faces same data/privacy concerns
- Discourse: backed by venture capital, same as above
- Revolt: slow development, no game streaming, otherwise decent
- Matrix: high technical barrier of entry, but promising.

Hah. When they first came out, I had a feeling this would happen. I bought 3 when they were on sale.
Its genuinely useful in my old car, but it has incredible potential for all kinds of random gadgets. One already serves as a little desktop controller for my audio at work.

Matrix does not have seamless desktop sharing or voice chat, and has a drastically higher executive cost. It also does not solve the information silo issue.
The fediverse as a whole is promising but likely needs to mature a bit longer. Theres a lot of potential issues that have yet to be worked through.

Yeah, this is a big part of why I stopped using discord recently. Not yet sure of any alternatives but leaving is step one.
