- Comment on Power bank to Steam Deck full chrages. 5 days ago:
I wouldn’t condemn Anker after whatever IoT camera thing, everything in that space sucks. As far as I know Anker makes good power bricks, and I’ll trust their stuff as long as it isn’t in The Cloud.
- Comment on Microsoft should be terrified of SteamOS 6 days ago:
For such a “stripped down” OS to fit in a 5GB / partition, it is very funny that they included printing but just left it off.
- Comment on Microsoft should be terrified of SteamOS 1 week ago:
I picked up a cheap Lumia as the whole WinPhone thing was winding up. They were actually quite nice. The whole winphone project must have been too low-key for the usual Microsoft Management to stick their noses into, and left competent people running the show.
If WinPhone had actually caught on, I’m sure that some asshole manager would have taken over and turned it into yet another Windows 11. But for a brief moment, MS made a good OS. With no apps.

Finally, something I can read VN text on
- Comment on Might as well get a laptop??? 1 week ago:
If an iPad ran SteamOS, it would choke on running out of memory before Steam was done loading.
- Comment on The deck is a damn good manga reader 2 weeks ago:
If you want to read within Linux, Papers is touchscreen-friendly. KOreader is probably the best touchscreen experience, once you get past its awkward but incredibly configurable interface.
My eyes are too old to read on the Deck’s screen, personally.
- Comment on [help] Black Screen of Death 4 weeks ago:
Either the battery is toast, or some component like “the chip responsible for rapidly cutting power over to the battery” is toast.
I wonder if connecting to a < 30w power supply would also result in your deck crapping out under load.
- Comment on [PSA] Wifi warning on the refurbished OLED decks 4 weeks ago:
I heard that some people even have phones nowadays without a single SFP port. Madness.
- Comment on Decksight, an OLED screen replacement for LCD decks, is now in crowdfunding 5 weeks ago:
I would definitely go for that, if it wasn’t a whole world of pain to tear down the Deck to do a screen change.
- Comment on [Discussion] What games are you playing on your deck? - December 2024 1 month ago:
Castlevania Dominus Collection. I don’t know how I ever beat the games way back when, now I have to rewind during boss fights a lot. Got bored with Dawn of Sorrow as it went to the True Ending back stretch, really enjoying Portrait of Ruin. Johnathan’s mobility combined with Charlotte’s “fuck you and everyone around you” make such a great team.
- Comment on [Leak] Steam Controller 2 render thumbnail leaked in SteamVR drivers 1 month ago:
Doesn’t everybody play fighting games on “a piece of plywood with a bunch of buttons jammed into it”?
- Comment on [Leak] Steam Controller 2 render thumbnail leaked in SteamVR drivers 1 month ago:
The Steam Deck’s controller is usable without Steam running, except for that long, looong pause when Steam has taken over the controller but hasn’t anything with it yet.
I wish that Steam would not put the mouse buttons on the triggers, just leave them on the trackpad-click. And put “high res trackpad scrolling” on the left pad. But you can’t have everything.
- Comment on Sony is reportedly working on a PS5 portable 1 month ago:
Sony is going to have to invent a new “shittier than SD and ten times as expensive” memory card format first.
The Vita already proved how serious Sony is about the handheld market. “Someday, we’re going to make a system that is ten times as powerful as the Steam Deck and runs for a week on a single charge”. The only purpose of making such a nothingburger announcement is to try to Osbourne Effect the rest of the handheld market.
- Comment on Had to reimage my deck; impressed by how well a backup of my home folder carried over system and app settings 1 month ago:
If it was your only copy, then it wasn’t a backup.
- Comment on Deck to LG TV 2 months ago:
Not a dumb question, I have seen my Deck carry some weird bugs across a reboot.
- Comment on An OLED Mod For The Original Steam Deck Is Being Made - Steam Deck HQ 2 months ago:
I have an early Deck, so I know that pulling the battery* is going to be a huge pita.
*without setting it and myself on fire.
- Comment on An OLED Mod For The Original Steam Deck Is Being Made - Steam Deck HQ 2 months ago:
I don’t need any special advances in batteries, I just need “it’s possible to replace them” and “it’s possible to get them”.
- Comment on SteamOS 3.6 Is Now Released With Performance Improvements, Mura Compensation, and Much More - Steam Deck HQ 2 months ago:
The stable Steam Client is still a September build, even though the whole rest of the OS is dated to a few days ago.
The funny part is that you can hold down the … button, and see the new overlay which has the new recording shortcuts. They do not work.
- Comment on [Discussion] What games are you playing on your deck? - October 2024 3 months ago:
I think the flatpak is still up.
Fuck Nintendo.
- Comment on [Discussion] SteamOS 3.6 is nearly here, with Valve focusing on bug fixes before release. What are some bugs you've encountered (on either Stable or Beta) that you're hoping to see fixed? 3 months ago:
Sometimes when I go into Desktop Mode, X11 doesn’t have any screens. The deck just sits there with a black screen, until I ssh in and kill plasma
- Comment on There's a reason we aren't as harsh on the Steam Deck. Actually, a couple. 4 months ago:
It is rare to see a game get this wrong, the last one I saw was a Borderlands. If you look at a game’s Steamdb cloud listing, they list Windows’s save location, and then Mac/Linux saves are expressed as a rewrite rule.
Cloud saves on PS are handled quite simply - if you didn’t pay for your very own PS Plus then go fuck yourself. I have lost dozens of Aloy hours on my brother’s PS4.
- Comment on Deck Buttons Releases Real Metal Steam Deck Buttons In Our Devices - Steam Deck HQ 4 months ago:
The existing buttons are made out of a plastic that wears well when rubbing against their contact-points in the case. The plastics are chosen to be compatible, self-lubricating and “not spalling or rubbing eachother to death”.
I doubt that these metalized buttons have been tested for their long-term wear characteristics.
- Comment on Adding gog games to steam deck 4 months ago:
Go to Desktop Mode, run Plasma Discover, get the Heroic flatpak, run Heroic, log into GoG there, install games.
Heroic is pretty damn good at doing the rest. It’ll install the Linux or Windows version of your games, it’ll add them to Steam, it’ll run them. Heroic will even give Steam some coverart for your games. (Many are missing the logo, tho. DeckyLoader +SteamGridDB plugin fixes that.)
- Comment on Steam Deck SteamOS 3.6.10 Beta 'Tenth time's the charm' fixes some real nuisances 5 months ago:
Is it the same as “sometimes when I go to Desktop Mode undocked, KDE decides that I have zero screens” and I’m staring at blackness? I have to ssh in and shutdown to fix it.
Not reboot, shutdown. If I reboot, the next time I go into desktop mode I’ll get the same thing. I think there is some ring < 0 or EC shenanigans going on there.
- Comment on Valve upgrades Steam Families and Game Recording in the latest Steam Beta 5 months ago:
I don’t think you can opt in, the Families beta isn’t on the deck yet.
- Comment on [Game] Helldivers 2 Gets New Steam Deck Graphics Preset Alongside New Difficulty Level 5 months ago:
Yeah, the problem is that there is a well-set standard for VRR on a regular DP connection, there’s a so-so standard for VRR on HDMI, but there isn’t a good standard for communicating VRR through an internal connection. The market is at a standstill with not enough tablet vendors asking for VRR, and neither the SoC vendors or the panel vendors want to be the first one to build only half of the solution. Apple or Samsung could build a full solution on their own and jumpstart that market, but can’t be arsed.
- Comment on [Game] Fix For Jackbox Megapicker Corrupting Steam Decks Released - Steam Deck HQ 5 months ago:
The main thing that a bad actor would gain is “being kicked off of the steam store”. The bigger threat would be if Gabe figures out which is the bad actor’s main account. Losing all their games would be pretty big blowback for such an attacker.
- Comment on [Game] Fix For Jackbox Megapicker Corrupting Steam Decks Released - Steam Deck HQ 5 months ago:
The problem is that SteamOS doesn’t have a whole lot of boot options besides “start up directly into Game Mode successfully”. If Steam chokes while ingesting any of its config or any metadata in your library, that’s the end of it. You can hold a button to wipe everything (the Playstation solution), or you can figure out how to boot a live-iso and fix “the problem”. Not everybody has the skills to fix stuff in Linux, heck not everybody has the ability to “boot up from a usb stick and have a working keyboard, using only one USB hole”.
- Comment on What have you been playing lately? 5 months ago:
Star Stuff : which is a very cute little programming-puzzle game. Light on the programming - you are heavily boxed into there only being one correct solution.
The Farmer Was Replaced : literally “Python the game”.
Veritus : the sequel to Prodigal. It’s weaker for lacking the whole adventure side of things, and no waifus 😭.
- Comment on Dragon Age The Veilguard will be Steam Deck verified and EA app will be not required 5 months ago:
There is no guarantee that EA won’t change the deal after you’ve bought the game.
