But you didn’t directly plug it in, there was always some sort of adapter involved (thanks for the generous ports, Valve). There must have been something wrong with the adapters. Sometimes, you just have to flip USB-C over for it to work (thanks, Intel).
- Comment on Cannot run game bought from itch.io on steam deck because of missing licenses 2 weeks ago:
You might be the first person to run the Linux build, including the developer. I have a few games where the Linux version is a mess, so I have to use the Windows ver. “Win32 is Linux’s stable gaming API”.
- Comment on Cannot run game bought from itch.io on steam deck because of missing licenses 2 weeks ago:
I think the problem is that the game is literally the same build as steam’s, but the dev didn’t do a very good job of neutering the “ask a steam api” bit. They accept “lol what is steam?” as a valid answer, but not “steam is responding, and says you own 0 copies of game 8675309”.
First, check protondb. Then put a comment up on itch.io. Is anybody else complaining? Is anybody else commenting on the game at all?
Add the game to heroic and let heroic add it to Steam? I recommend always using either the latest proton-ge, or the latest of the previous proton-ge (9.27).
Or remove the steamapi library from the game’s folder. Or add a steam_appid.txt.
Or a last resort would be Goldberg.

I rather like the Logitech MX 2. It’s comfortable (for a right hander), and is shockingly reliable for a bluetooth device.
My recc for a keyboard is “good god never an Epomaker”. They look like a discount Keychron, but are fucking useless. A stuttttering messs.

- Comment on How to fix built-in speaker audio on Fedora 43 2 weeks ago:
Bear in mind that the speakers don’t work by default because they are being driven by an amp that can totally blow them up. You are installing software protection that is supposed to physically model how the waveform is turned into sound and heat, and veto signals that might damage stuff. If it’s wrong, your speakers can die.
- Comment on Has anyone done diy repair on power button (not the outer plastic but the actual button on the mobo) 3 weeks ago:
You could try working a little deoxyit or contact cleaner into the switch. Considering that it didn’t have a period of being flaky before it died, I am not optimistic that this will help.
Isn’t it great that the most important button is soldered on the backside of the mainboard, and is also fragile af?
- Comment on I was recently gifted a Steam Deck for Christmas! If you only had a budget of, let's say 50 bucks, what would you get? 4 weeks ago:
Tomb Raider Survival Trilogy for $7.19
Shadow of Mordor/War for $6.99
Prodigal for $1.49 - Zelda plus date sim
Toem for $3.99 - gotta photograph em all
Crosscode for $5.99 - SPMMOOTY
Saint’s Row 4 $2.99
Vampire Survivors for $3.74 - everybody is legally required to have a copy
20 Small Mazes for $0 Doronko Wanko $0
My main recommendation is “don’t put all of your money into a bunch of PS5 AAA games”. PS5-ish games fit “if we turn all of the settings down, and render in 1/4 rez, and then AI upscale, and still your battery only lasts an hour”.
A strength of the Deck is in delivering an endless back catalog of PS4 and prior styles of games. Another is in bringing forward a ton of indie games that can’t win at “marketing”, so they fight like hell on “mixing up new and interesting gameplay” and “price”.
- Comment on Valve is stopping production of LCD Steam Deck models, once sold out they will be gone forever 5 weeks ago:
The Deck’s reader does the full 80MB/s UHS-I well enough. It works well electrically, but the ejector sucks. I’ve picked up my system, and had the card randomly hang out like 😛. It is vital to tape over the card to keep it from wandering off on its own.

With the way that memory prices are going, Valve is going to bring back the 64GB model.

My left stick started jittering after a year. Switched the sticks out with Gulikit, and they were fine for a few years, then the right stick went bonkers psycho.
Replaced it with a̶n̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r̶-b̶r̶a̶n̶d̶ Gulikit again, cuz that was the only make available. Sigh.

Hey, speaking of “early lcd models”, how is your power button holding up? Mine is getting flaky. Have to press it a couple of times, maybe tilt it a little, to get it to work.
- Comment on Deck wakes from suspend after latest SteamOS update. 3 months ago:
Go to bluetooth settings, and tap on each of your paired devices. There is a (probsbly brand new) setting to Allow this device to wake the deck.

Heroic’s installed as a Flatpak, right? Any path that flatpak doesn’t actually allow out of the sandbox is going to be inside the sandbox.

- Comment on [Help] Swapped nvme from old deck into new deck, now headphones don't work 5 months ago:
Huh. Mmmaybe the LCD model has board revisions that are still different enough to trip things up? It’s definitely a bug to have wireplumber not “do the right thing no matter what hardware it booted up on today”, it would probably take a Valve engineer to chase that down and submit a patch.
- Comment on [Help] Swapped nvme from old deck into new deck, now headphones don't work 5 months ago:
👆 this sounds like the most probable fix. OP buried a very critical factoid - they moved the drive between OLED and LCD models. The systems have some significant hardware differences (as evidenced by the Windows drivers changing so much that Valve took a long time to update em). Somewhere, Pipewire has squirreled away details about routing or preferred devices from the old system.
Heck, there might be journalct log entries being generated you plug into the headphone jack. Pipewire could already be trying to tell you exactly what’s wrong.

- Comment on [QUICK QUESTION] Steam Deck Mirroring on my Android Tab with cable 6 months ago:
The HDMI port on any dock is output only. You would have to get an HDMI capture adapter to go that route, and watching those live with low lag is problematic. Beware of capture adapters that are USB 2.0 (a lot of cheapos will lie about this).
Another way to go would be Steam Link over wired ethernet.
One last way, which involves only one higher-end USB-C cable, would be to directly plug the deck to the tablet. One (or both) would act in a CDC-ether role to network the two together. (How do you simultaneously access the internet/Steam’s servers?). This setup is very fussy on the software side. I have been remarkably unsuccessful at connecting the deck to a laptop in this fashion, but Android is more open to doing “dual role” usb stuff.
- Comment on Anyone else get this? 6 months ago:
Steam should be loading a separate controller config for every game, or at very least loading a default profile of “every button is literally the same as an Xbox controller”. A weird SteamInput config shouldn’t affect across all games, I think.
Does it act up in Desktop mode? How about if Steam is closed, and you play something from Heroic?
It’s possible that a hardware fault is sending insane inputs. Bad connections to the controller-sub-boards? The controller microchip just going batty?
- Comment on Does the charge limit actually work? 6 months ago:
It’s doing the right thing - most of the harm has been done with the battery being charged up in the first place. If you can pull power from the wall instead of battery, do it. Ordinary usage will chip the battery down to the charge limit in due time.
I have an ASUS laptop which does not do this. When you turn on the battery limit, it stops pulling power from the wall until the battery is down to the right place. Very rude.

- Comment on SteamOS 3.7.13 update gets fixes for more handhelds, fixes WiFi regression on Steam Deck OLED 6 months ago:
SteamOS isn’t really meant for any system outside the Steam Deck and a handful of similar handhelds. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have any Nvidia drivers, for starters.
Bazzite and Nobara are the general answers to gaming on any random PC hardware.
