This is not Blender. I know what real photography is and fake 3D models in Blender. Making 3D models that look this good and realistic is literally impossible.
The reality is that I’ve just been buying dozens of headsets just so I can take this picture. I even chopped up the controllers to make them all colide with each other:

As a troll comment it’s a terrible attempt, but as a joke it’s also absolutely terrible.

iirc there was a way to do custom textures in steamvr for your controllers.
having the obj files are a boon in this case, right?

There are lower quality models available in the SteamVR files that are set up for texturing.
The files used here are for designing accessories.

These are the more technical, hardware developer models. They have no UVs (unwrapping the 3D model flat), plus they are not at all optimized since they focus more on being dimensionally accurate.
